What is Passover?

Passover is a feast of celebrationobserved by the Jewish People and some Christians all over the world.

These are the first of the Lord’s appointed festivals, which were to be proclaimed as official days for holy assembly (Leviticus; 23):

PASSOVER– begins at sundown on the 14th day of the 1st month (Nisan which is April/May in English) Lev. 23; 5

It is held in remembrance of Israel’s deliverance out of Egyptian bondage. It also represents a shadow of the Crucifixion of Christ and a type of salvation.

UNLEAVENED BREAD (The Bread of Haste)– begins on the 15th day of the month (Nisan) Lev. 23; 6

Is the remembrance of the bread made without yeast. They had to hurry to prepare it, to leave. There was no time for the proofing process in bread making.

FIRSTFRUITS – begins on the 18th day of the month (Nisan) Lev. 23; 9-14

Is the remembrance of the crossing of the Red Sea.

The History of Passover

In the book of Leviticus chapter 23 verses 4 and 5, it states,

“In addition to the Sabbath, these are the Lord’s appointed festivals, the official days for holy assembly that are to be celebrated at their proper times each year. The Lord’s Passover begins at sundown on the fourteenth day of the first month. On the next day, the fifteenth day of the month, you must begin celebrating the Festival of Unleavened Bread.

The Hebrew word for passover is “Pesach” and translated it means “a passing over, or to pass or hover over.” It has double meaning, the passing over in judgment of the death angel but also the thought, hovering over in divine protection. The Lord told them that they were to celebrate this feast yearly and explain to their children what the whole service meant. Our enlightenment is that Jesus Christ himself is the true Passover.

The Feasts of Passover commemorates the deliverance of the Nation of Israel from the bondage of slavery in Egypt. The heads of each household were to take a lamb of the first year on the tenth day of the first month and set it aside until the fourteenth day. In the evening of the 14th day the lamb was to be killed, and its blood sprinkled on the lintel (doorposts) and 2 side posts of the household door. The household itself was to feast upon the body of the lamb roasted with fire, with bitter herbs and [the bread of haste] unleavened bread (bread without yeast). They were to eat it in haste, and be dressed, ready to leave Egypt at the midnight hour. At midnight the death angel would pass through the land and every house that did not have the token of the blood on the door, door and sideposts would suffer judgment. That judgment was the death of the firstborn of both man and beast. The Lord said “when I see the blood, I will pass over you and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt” (Ex. 12: 12) So, the Feast of Passover originated with the “passing over” of the angel of death over the blood-sprinkled doors of the Israelites and also the Egyptians who believed the mandate.

MEDITATION:REMEMBRANCE & REFLECTION

DECREE: I WILL REMEMBER WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE!

HYMN OF REMEMBRANCE:

WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD

Christ our redeemer died on the cross, died for the sinner, paid all his due;

Sprinkle your soul with the blood of the Lamb, and I will pass, will pass over you.

Chorus:

When I see the blood

When I see the blood

When I see the blood

I will pass, I will pass over you

Chiefest of sinners, Jesus will save; As he has promised, that he will do;

Wash in the fountain opened for sin, and I will pass will pass over you.

Chorus (repeat)

Judgment is coming, all will be there, each one receiving justly his due;

Hide in the saving, sin-cleansing blood, and I will pass, will pass over you.

O great compassion! O boundless love! O loving kindness, faithful and true!

Find peace and shelter under the blood, And I will pass, will pass over you.

When I see the blood

When I see the blood

When I see the blood

I will pass, I will pass over you
