The IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

The IIHF World Junior Championship debuted on Canadian ice at the Montreal Forum in 1978, when a 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky burst onto the international scene by leading the tournament in scoring and helping Canada to a bronze medal.

Gretzky was just one of a handful of future NHL stars to feature in that World Juniors – he was joined on the tournament all-star team by Viacheslav Fetisov (Soviet Union), Mats Naslund (Sweden), RistoSiltanen (Finland) and Anton Stastny (Czechoslovakia), who combined for 1,853 points in 2,409 NHL games.

Canada has hosted the IIHF World Junior Championship 12 times, most recently in 2017 when Toronto, Ont., and Montreal, Que., welcomed the world.

The 13th will come this winter when Vancouver and Victoria, B.C., host the 2019 edition of the World Juniors from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. Ten teams will compete on the West Coast – Canada’s National Junior Team will defend its gold medal, joined by the Czech Republic, Denmark, Russia and Switzerland in Group A, while Finland, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Sweden and the U.S. will comprise Group B.

In order to run an event of the magnitude of the IIHF World Junior Championship, the host committee leans on an army of volunteers, who perform a variety of duties to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.

Volunteers are responsible for everything from welcoming guests and providing game programs, to assisting with award ceremonies, receiving and counting merchandise, managing information desks and escorting the families of the players to and from the hotel. Volunteers also provide hospitality for VIPs, which include IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) and Hockey Canada members, government dignitaries and sponsors.
