“HISTORY & ROMANCE OF THE BAYONET”

MUSEUM TALK SEPTEMBER 30

September 16, 2012, Park Ridge, NJ- The Pascack Historical Society will kick

of its fall speaking schedule with- the “HISTORY & ROMANCE OF THE

BAYONET” on Sunday, September 30, 2 p.m. , at its barrier-free museum 19

Ridge Avenue, Park Ridge. Free admission. Children welcome when

accompanied by an adult.

The bayonet has a rich military history. From the French baionnette,

it is knife, sword, or spike-shaped weapon designed to fit in, on, over or

underneath the muzzle of a rifle, musket or similar weapon, effectively turning the

gun into a spear. The bayonet was possibly a hunting implement decades before it

was adopted as a military weapon.

Guest speaker Dan Morrison, a New Jersey resident, is the Co-Founder

of the Society of American Bayonet Collectors, a contributing resource for bayonet

identification at the New York Historical Society (NY), Valley Forge Museum

(PA) and the Gettysburg Museum (MD). He holds a BA cum laude from Harvard

and an MBA in Marketing for Dartmouth’s Tuck School. A published author,

Morrison is currently writing a collector’s resource book on the P1913/M1917

bayonet.

Mr. Morrison will talk about the history and types of bayonets, and the

study, collecting and preserving of them. He will personalize the importance of this

weapon to the American soldier, and will display some bayonets from his personal

collection. The society’s collection will also be available for viewing, including a

Revolutionary War bayonet thought to have been found in the Pascack Valley

area. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bayonets for identification ( no

values given)and sharing with audience members.

No reservations are necessary. Complimentary coffee/tea and cookies will

be served. A Q & A period will follow the talk. For further information log onto

www.pascackhistoricalsociety.org or call 201-573-0307.
