Yearbook Terms

  • Alignment: How text is arranged horizontally in a text block.
  • Left-aligned text is even on the left side
  • Right-aligned text is even on the right side
  • Justified text is even on both the left and right sides
  • AWPC font: Part of a font collection provided by Walsworth Publishing.
  • Bleed bars: Gray or blue bars that surround the document.
  • Bleed refers to items that extend off the page when printed.
  • Body Copy: The text of the main story
  • CMYK: Acronym for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, four main colors
  • Colophon: Statement at the end of the book giving printing details
  • Control Center: InDesign palette specific to Walsworth customers
  • Cropping: Omitting parts of an original photo
  • Dominant: The largest element or image on a spread
  • Double-page spread: Two facing pages of a yearbook
  • Endsheets: Sheets appearing at the front and back of the yearbook, may or may not have text/images
  • Flat: Consists of eight pages, the front or back of a signature
  • Folio: The page number in a yearbook
  • Grid: A form of modular design that uses horizontal and vertical lines to specify placement of page elements
  • Image Placer: A plug-in for InDesign specifically for Walsworth customers
  • Image Tag: A Walsworth InDesign plug-in that allows you to number image windows
  • Index: Alphabetized list of names and contents that indicates pages on which a person appears
  • InDesign: A page layout program made by Adobe
  • Ladder: A yearbook blueprint of the contents of each page
  • Leading: The amount of vertical space between two lines of type
  • Mug shot (or Mugs): Portraits in rows and columns of all the students
  • Photoshop: An Adobe software program that allows digital image manipulation
  • Pica: A printer’s unit of measurement, 1 pica equals 1/16 of an inch or 12 points
  • Point: A printer’s unit of measurement, 12 points to a pica and 72 points to an inch
  • Proof: A hard-copy printout or electronic version of pages submitted to Walsworth
  • Reverse: Making an area white on a dark background
  • Rule of thirds: Mentally dividing an image into horizontal and vertical thirds, like a tic-tac-toe board, to determine the center of interest (CVI)
  • Section: A part of the yearbook such as “Athletic” section or “Student Life” section
  • Signature: A sheet that when folded equals 16 pages
  • Spread: Two facing pages that together create a layout
  • Template: Previously defined pages created by a layout program.
  • Theme: The idea or concept threaded throughout a yearbook.
  • White space: Negative space in which there are no objects, used to move the reader’s eye around the elements on the spread
