Strand 2: Standard II (Life Science): Understand the properties, structures, and processes of living things and the interdependence of living things and their environments.

K-4 Benchmark III: Know the parts of the human body and their functions.

  1. Describe simple body functions (e.g., breathing, eating).
  2. Describe the basic food requirements for humans.
  3. Describe how some parts of human bodies differ from similar parts of other animals (e.g., hands and feet/paws; ears).
  4. Identify a variety of human organs (e.g., lungs, heart, stomach, brain).
  5. Know that various nutrients are required for specific parts and functions of the body (e.g., milk for bones and teeth, protein for muscles, sugar for energy).
  6. Identify the functions of human systems (e.g., respiratory, circulatory, digestive).

Student Objectives: Students will gain knowledge of the human body parts. They will know the body parts in English, know where they are, and how they move.

Procedures:

  1. The children will come and sit on the rug quietly and calmly.
  2. Students are told they are going to be learning about the human body parts.
  3. Students will be read “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle by a teacher.
  4. The teacher will ask questions about the book while the students follow along and perform the tasks asked in the book.
  5. The students will then stand up and stretch.
  6. The teacher will explain to the students how to perform the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” as a group.
  7. The teacher will perform it slowly until the students understand and follow along.
  8. The teacher and students sing and perform the movements of the song, and after mastery, they perform and sing the song faster and faster.
  9. The students will gain knowledge and understanding of where the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes are on the human body.

Materials:

The book “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle

Duration:

The Interactive Read-Aloud “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle: 5 minutes

Students are able to show where their head, shoulders, knees, or toes are if asked.

Evaluation:

This lesson went smoothly. The book was a little short and the children wanted to be read more. But they participated with the interactive read-aloud and phonemic awareness song happily. They moved when the book told them to move. They learned about the human body while I read the book. Then, we preformed the song. They were happy to do it because when asked, most of them knew the song and sang proudly. The teachers preformed it first, and then the students followed slowly. We went over the song over and over slowly until it appeared that no one was having difficulty. We sang the song and gradually sang it faster and faster until we were tired. I know that the students enjoyed it because they wanted to do it again. We had great time learning about body parts.
