PARTIAL SARUM MISSAL

Temporal

First Sunday in Advent.

At Mass : Office.

Unto thee, O Lord, will I lift up my soul ; my God, I have put my trust in thee : O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. Ps. Shew me thy ways, O Lord : and teach me thy paths.

Collect

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord thy power, and come ; that we may be found worthy to be rescued by thy protection from the threatening dangers of our sins, and to be set free by thy deliverance. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Memory of saint Mary. Collect.

O God, who wast pleased that thy Word should take flesh in the womb of blessed ever-virgin Mary, through the message of an angel, grant unto us thy suppliants, that as we believe her to be truly the mother of God, so we may be aided by her intercessions before thee. Through etc.

The Epistle. Rom xiii, 11-14

Brethren, knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy: But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gradual.

For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed, O Lord. V. Shew me thy ways, O Lord, and teach me thy paths. After this verse the quire shall repeat the Gradual.

Alleluya. V. Shew us thy mercy, O Lord : and grant us thy salvation.

Sequence.

Thou for ever our salvation,

thou the life of all creation,

thou our hope of restoration,

thou the never-failing light ;

Grieving for man's loss impending,

by the tempter's wiles pretending,

camest down thine aid extending,

leaving not tlie starry height.

In our flesh thy glory veiling,

all on earth, in ruin failing,

thou didst save by might prevailing,

bringing joy to all our race.

Grant, O Christ, thine expiation,

unto us thine own creation,

take us for an habitation

cleansed for thyself to grace.

By thy first humiliation

grant us. Lord, justification ;

when again in exaltation

thou shalt come, O set us free.

When in glory manifested

thou the secret heart hast tested,

in unsullied robes invested

may we closely follow thee !

The Gospel. Matt. xxi, 1-9

When they drew nigh to Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto mount Olivet, then Jesus sent two disciples, Saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you, and immediately you shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them and bring them to me. And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye, that the Lord hath need of them: and forthwith he will let them go. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy king cometh to thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke. And the disciples going, did as Jesus commanded them. And they brought the ass and the colt, and laid their garments upon them, and made him sit thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees, and strewed them in the way: And the multitudes that went before and that followed, cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Creed.

Offertory.

Unto thee, O Lord, will I lift up my soul ; my God, I have put my trust in thee : O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me, for all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed.

V. Lead me forth in thy truth and learn me ; for thou art the God of my salvation ; in thee hath been my hope all the day long.

V. Look upon me and have mercy upon me ; O Lord, keep my soul and deliver me, because I have put my trust in thee.

Secret.

May these sacred gifts, O Lord, cleanse us by their powerful virtue, and make to us come with more purity to him who gave them. Through.

Another Secret, of blessed Mary.

Strengthen, we beseech thee, O Lord, our minds in the mysteries of the true faith ; that we who stedfastly confess him who was conceived of a virgin to be very God and very man, may, by the power of the same saving incarnation, be found worthy to attain unto everlasting happiness. Through etc.

Communion.

The Lord shall shew lovingkindness, and our land shall give her increase.

Postcommunion.

May we receive, O Lord, thy mercy in the midst of thy temple, and anticipate with due honours the approaching solemnity of our restoration. Through.

Another Postcommunion, of blessed Mary.

Pour down, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection. Through etc.

Wednesday.

The Epistle. James v, 7-10

Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth: patiently bearing till he receive the early and latter rain. Be you therefore also patient, and strengthen your hearts: for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Grudge not, brethren, one against another, that you may not be judged. Behold the judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, for an example of suffering evil, of labour and patience, the prophets, who spoke in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel. Mark i, 1-8

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaias the prophet: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare the way before thee. A voice of one crying in the desert: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John was in the desert baptizing, and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptized by him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying: There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I have baptized you with water; but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

If any feast, the service of which ought to be used, should fall on this Wednesday, the above epistle and gospel should be used on thursday, if that day is vacant ; otherwise, they shall be altogether omitted in that year.

Friday.

The Lesson. Isaiah li, 1-8

Thus saith the Lord God, Hearken unto me, you that follow that which is just, and you that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence you are hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you are dug out. Look unto Abraham your father, and to Sara that bore you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and multiplied him. The Lord therefore will comfort Sion, and will comfort all the ruins thereof: and he will make her desert as a place of pleasure, and her wilderness as the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of praise. Hearken unto me, O my people, and give ear to me, O my tribes: for a law shall go forth from me, and my judgment shall rest to be a light of the nations. My just one is near at hand, my saviour is gone forth, and my arms shall judge the people: the islands shall look for me, and shall patiently wait for my arm. Lift up your eyes to heaven, and look down to the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish like smoke, and the earth shall be worn away like a garment, and the inhabitants thereof shall perish in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my justice shall not fail. Hearken to me, you that know what is just, my people who have my law in your heart: fear ye not the reproach of men, and be not afraid of their blasphemies. For the worm shall eat them up as a garment: and the moth shall consume them as wool: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my justice from generation to generation.

The Gospel. Matt. iii, 1-6

In those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. And the same John had his garment of camels' hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan: And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

If however, Friday should not be a vacant day, the above Epistle and Gospel are altogether omitted. This applies to the whole of Advent and from the first Sunday after the octave of the Epiphany to Quinquagesima, and from the octave of Easter to the Sunday next before Ascension Day. But from the first Sunday after Trinity to Advent, if Wednesday or Thursday be not vacant, then the Wednesday Epistle and Gospel shall be read upon Friday, if it be a vacant day. Otherwise they shall be altogether omitted. For the Wednesday Epistle and Gospel should never be read on Monday or Tuesday, nor should the Friday Epistle and Gospel he read on Thursday ; because a service ought never to be anticipated according to the use of Sarum.

Second Sunday in Advent.

At Mass. Office.

O people of Sion, behold the Lord shall come to save the nations, and the Lord shall make his glorious voice to be heard in the gladness of your heart. Ps. Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep.

Collect.

Stir up, O Lord, our hearts to prepare the way of thy only-begotten One, that through his coming we may be found worthy to serve thee with pure hearts, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Rom. xv. 4-13

Brethren, whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Gradual.

Out of Sion hath God appeared in perfect beauty. Our God shall come and shall not keep silence. V. Gather my saints together unto me ; those that have made a covenant with me with sacrifice.

Alleluya. V. The powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

Sequence.

Let the choir devoutly bring

Welcome to th' eternal King,

And with one consent renew

The Creator's homage due.

Him angelic legions praise,

On his face enraptured gaze.

On him wait all earthly things

Till his nod their trial brings.

Awful he in judgements deep

Yet in might doth mercy keep ;

By thine agony of woe

Pity, Lord, and save us now.

To the gleaming stars on high

Raise the world in purity :

Let thy saving health appear

Scattering perils far and near.

Bid the universe be clean,

Let us live in peace serene.

Till unto those realms we soar

Where thou reignest evermore.

The Gospel. Luke xxi. 25-33

At that time Jesus said to his disciples, there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Offertory.

Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us that the people may rejoice in thee ? Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.

V. Lord, thou art become gracious unto thy land : thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob : thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people.

V. Mercy and truth are met together. Truth shall flourish out of the earth, and righteousness hath looked down from heaven.

Secret.

Be pleased, O Lord, we beseech to accept our humble prayers and oblations, and whereas our merits avail nothing, succour us with thy protection. Through etc.

Communion.

Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand on high, and behold the joy that Cometh unto thee from God.

Post communion.

Refreshed and nourished with this spiritual food and drink we humbly beseech thee, O Lord, that by participation in this mystery thou wouldest teach us to despise earthly, and to love heavenly things. Through etc.

Wednesday.

The Lesson. Zech. viii. 3-8

Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the Lord of hosts. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness, saith the Lord Almighty.
