Part-Time Animal Shelter Attendant

Salary Range: Salary dependent on experience. Position Available: Immediately and will be open until filled.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and one year of clerical and/or animal shelter experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience; basic keyboarding, word processing and spreadsheet experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Take complaints by phone from the public and create necessary computerized documentation associated with complaint; assist Animal Control Officers with or perform rabies vaccinations and euthanasia injections; clean and sanitize the kennels; assist citizens with impoundment of unwanted animals (includes completion of necessary computerized documentation); assist Animal Control Officers with animal removal from their vehicles and impoundment of such animals (includes completion of necessary computerized documentation); assist citizens with adoptions (includes showing of animals, completion of necessary computerized documentation and collection of applicable fees); assist citizens with the reclaim of lost animals (includes removal of the animal from its kennel, completion of necessary computerized documentation, and the collection of applicable fees); supervise and assign tasks to community service personnel; schedule or make minor repairs to the facility and equipment; order and inventory supplies and equipment; and interact with public to explain animal control laws, regulations and procedures; adoption of animals, care and feeding of animals.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of the proper care of animals; must be able to drive a car, have a valid NC Driver License and a good driving record; must be able to lift 50 pounds; must be able to meet and deal with the public tactfully, courteously and effectively; must possess good computer skills; must possess good verbal and written communication skills; must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; must be able to type 40 wpm; must be able to radio on a police frequency; must possess some mechanical ability for animal capture equipment refurbishment and repair and be able to use various hand tools for minor kennel repair; must be able to learn in a classroom setting for euthanasia by injection and rabies vaccinator certification; and must be able to decipher, summarize and make recommendations to a complainant concerning and animal related complaint that often times requires an immediate response from animal control.
