General Information

The Belfast Royal Academy was founded in 1785 and is the oldest school in the city. Originally situated near St. Anne’s Cathedral in what is now Academy Street, it was transferred to the Cliftonville Road in 1880, when the present building was erected. For more than a century the school was named Belfast Academy. In 1888 Queen Victoria granted permission for the school to style itself the Belfast Royal Academy.

Belfast Royal Academy is a voluntary grammar school of some 1400 pupils, with a further 160 pupils in the preparatory department. Its management is vested in a Board of Governors on which parents and teachers are represented, along with Governors elected by Members of the Academy and nominees of the Minister of Education.

Three members of staff, including theSubjectLeader , are responsible for the teaching of Technology and Design throughout the school.

Key stage 3 pupils are allocated 2 periods of Technology and Design per fortnight (each period is 1 hour long).

At GCSE and at AS/A2, pupils follow the CCEA specification for Electronic Systems and Control.

Technology and Design is taught in a modern purpose-built building, which houses 2 workshops and 4 planning rooms. Each planning room is equipped with the latest computing, data projection and audio-visual technology, amounting departmental wide in to 50 desktop computers, a CNC router, laser cutter and 3D printer.

A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school is essential.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary of main aspects of role:

•To teach Technology and Design at KS3,GCSE Level and A-Level.

•To carry out the role of Class Tutor

•To maintain sound levels of discipline

•To work with other members of the Technology and Design department to develop the schemes of work and to ensure that the Technology and Design curriculum is met.

•To carry out such administrative and such other tasks within the Technology and Design department as are considered appropriate by the Subject Leader or thePrincipal.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

Essential

1.1A 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree in Technology and Design*.

1.2Recognition as a qualified teacher by the General Teaching Council (NI) or an equivalent qualification pending as part of a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.

1.3.Experience teaching Technology and Design to GCSE and A-Level

1.4.Evidence of a high standard in written communication.

1.5Evidence of ability to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.

1.6Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to cope effectively with the demands of the post.

Desirable

2.1A 1st class Honours degree.

2.2Experience teaching ICT at KS3 or GCSE.

2.3Experience teaching Electronic and Microelectronic control systems at GCSE and Systems and Control at A-Level

* Technology and Design: Qualifications to teach in secondary schools in Northern Ireland

Suitable qualifications which are acceptable to teach Technology and Design in the Northern Ireland curriculum (NIC) include:

  1. A degree or Teachers’ Certificate in Education (3 or 4 year duration) specialising in craft, design and technology/technology and design. The designation “craft, design and technology” is used as an umbrella title and includes the designated courses entitled: Crafts; Handicraft; Design and Technology (resistant materials option); Design, Craft and Technology and Technology (resistant material option).

OR

  1. A degree in Science or Technology with a substantive element of the degree content reflecting the nature and scope of the NIC together with a Post Graduate Certificate in Technology and Design and the City & Guilds Certificate No. 6131 in Workshop Competency.

OR

  1. A recognised qualification in teaching in a cognate area of the NIC/together with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Technology Education from the University of Ulster and the City & Guilds Certificate No. 6131 in Workshop Competency .
