PART I: Atomic Model Timeline

OBJECTIVE: This project is intended to help you piece together the story of the atom. Countless individuals in a multitude of fields have added to our understanding of these most basic particles of matter. New discoveries by philosophers and scientists in physics and chemistry have expanded and changed the model of the atom over time. In fact we are still waiting for Mr. Speers and the other physicists to figure out the “true” model of the atom. Until then we will just have to work with what we have.

1.  The attached sheet contains a list of scientists who have contributed to the development of atomic theory. All of these must be included but feel free to add more!

2.  With each model of the atom, include the following:

q  The country in which the discovery took place.

q  A significant historical event occurring at the time of the discovery

( ex. WWI), if applicable

q  A sentence or two about their contribution to the development of the atomic model.

q  If they developed a model, describe it and how it changed the previous model.

3.  Include pictures of the following models of the atom with the appropriate scientist. Under each write a brief explanation of the model.

·  Indivisible, solid sphere model

·
Electron cloud model

·  Planetary or solar system model

·  Plum pudding model

·  Rutherford’s nuclear atom

4.  It must be chronological, with dates clearly shown.

5.  Your project must be neat and legible.

6.  Your project must be larger than 8.5 x 11 in. in size

Be creative and use any format you wish. We will spend some class time in the library to assist your research. However, much this work may need to be done on your own time.
