Part 2: Scale Diagram, Pathways and Potted Plants

Potted Plants (2 points)

1. The pathway of your garden is going to be lined with potted plants, and the area of the base of the pots must be larger than 3¾ feet, but less than then 4 feet.

The shape must be a perfect square, so the length and width must be the same size. Draw and label the sides of the base as well as its area. You are not allowed to use decimals in your answer!

Pathways and Paving Stones (2 points)

2. The local home improvement center has offered to give you as many 2’ by 2’ square paving stones to create a pathway through your garden as you require. There should be an entrance to the garden from each of its four sides.

REMEMBER: Every time you put a paving stone down in an area you are losing 4 ft2 of area for the plant to grow. As you layout your path you will need to deduct the area of the path from the area of each plant.

Make sure that your plants still have the minimum amount of area required to survive as indicated by the table in the first part of this assignment.

Plant Sunlight Requirement *Minimum Area Required

Southwest Stink Flower / Full Sun / 400 ft2
Red Leafed Daisies / Full Sun / 500 ft2
Green Swamp Roses / Partial Sunlight / 600 ft2
Purple Daisies / Partial Sunlight / 400 ft2
White Mountain Poppies / Shade / 500 ft2
Creepy Purple Vines / Shade / 600 ft2
Orange Swamp Fern / Shade / 400 ft2
Blue Jungle Moss / Shade / 500 ft2

*Minimum Area Required: The area allotted to this plant can be larger, but not smaller than this area.

You may choose to change the type of plant that you use in each section. You can do this as long as you do not interfere with the requirements of your corporate sponsors in part one.

Scale Drawing (2 points)

3. You will be given a piece of graph paper where the side measure of each square is ¼ of an inch. On it you will need to draw a scale diagram of your garden. The scale that you will use to draw your garden will be 1 in: 8 ft. Be sure to divide your diagram up into sections, and label each section with the plant that is there, and the area taken up by that plant. Draw where your pathway will be.Make sure your area measures have taken into consideration the pathway stones!
