Scavenger Hunt Questions

All copyright laws are based on US laws for the sake of this scavenger hunt. Click on the headings to go to a website where the answers to the questions can be found. Most questions are TRUE/FALSE questions.

Part 1 - Basic Copyright Laws

  1. In 1967, Jimmy Stewart made, but didn’t publish, a movie about a Large rabbit, “Havrey.” Jimmy Stewart is no longer alive, so it’s totally okay for Michael Bay to make an action packed movie called Havrey that follows the script Jimmy Stewart made. Am I right or am I right?
  2. I just downloaded the ebook, “Tarzan of the Apes” for free. It’s totally public domain now because Tarzan was published in 1912 - so I didn’t break any laws.

Part 2 - Digital Media (there is no link for this section)

  1. I just downloaded a copy of Taylor Swift’s new song from YouTube. This is already posted publicly online, so it’s okay to download, right?
  2. My buddy made a nifty remix of a whole bunch of songs and wants to share it with me. He sends it via P2P network (ie, bit Torrent). Since it’s not whole songs, and since he’s only sharing it with me, it’s totally legal.
  3. I just downloaded the newest Marvel Superhero Movie illegally. I know it’s illegal, but it’s not like I’m going to get caught. Even if I do, who would prosecute someone who doesn’t have very much?

Part 3 - Wikipedia

  1. I just copied a couple of sentences from Wikipedia, and they are totally okay to use in my paper.
  2. I just copied a few sentences from a source I clicked on in Wikipedia, but I don’t want to plagiarize, so I changed a few of the words and the order of the sentences. Now I’m totally okay and my teacher won’t even know where it came from anyway.
  3. I just used wikipedia to gather a whole bunch of resources for my paper. I just clicked on each resource and used those for my resources. I’m not violating copyright because I didn’t use anything that could be copyrighted.

Part 4 - Fair Use

  1. I just copied and pasted a nice quote from a textbook into my paper. Since the textbook is copyrighted, I cited the source - so I’m not violating copyright or plagiarising.
  2. I want to use a clip from the Movie “Titanic” to show what kind of clothing was used while passengers journeyed on the infamous doomed steamliner. Since I’m using this in a school setting, this is covered under fair use.
