Part 1: Write a biography and summary of Omar Khadr’s case. Be sure to include the following points: (10)

  1. His childhood and reasons why he was in Afghanistan
  2. His capture and arrest
  3. His years at GuantanamoBay
  4. The charges he is facing
  5. The Canadian Supreme Court”s rulings

Part 2. Write a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper about this case based on your research. (20)

You must be sure to describe the legal and justice issues surrounding this case in terms of:

the rule of law,

habeus corpus,

the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms,

the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child,

the reasons why his government should demand that Omar Khadr be returned to Canada immediately.

  2. a list of the charges he has already pled guilty to and the ones that he is on trial for, make sure to include the Criminal Code section numbers and the sentences/punishments for each one.

Part 2. Create a chart with two columns titled CROWN and DEFENSE. Select the five most important facts that you think the lawyers for each side should stress in their closing arguments and explain your choices. (20)

Closing arguments: CROWN: mens rea, actus reus DEFENSE: reasonable doubt

Part 3.Imagine thatyou are the judge in this situation. Write your final decision in this case. You must describe the sentence that you are imposing and your reasons.Be sure to include aggravating and mitigating factors. (10)

C. CONTRACT LAW (30 pts)

Part 1. Keep a record of 5 times that you entered into a contract in the past week. For each one: (20)

describe the offer(was it verbal or written, express or implied),

identify the offeror and the offeree,

the method of the communication of acceptance

the consideration given.

There must be at least one example of you being the offeror.
