Music Videos

Directions:

PART 1: POWERPOINT

1.Read and annotate “With These Words, I Can Sell You Anything,” “Doubts about Doublespeak,” and “How to Detect Propaganda.”

2.Choose two music videos (you can select from the ones provided below, or you can choose your own). Videos and lyrics are linked at the end of this document.

3.Watch the videos, read the lyrics, and analyze for propaganda devices, doublespeak and loaded language. Annotate.

4.Create a PowerPoint in which you:

-Briefly introduce the artists and give a summary of each song

-Embed the music videosin your PowerPoint

-Use screen shots/still images from the music videos on other slides

-Identify at least six propaganda/doublespeak/loaded words techniques used in each music video, referencing the readings when possible: Explain the effect that thesix propaganda devices had on the song, as well as the impact you feel the song and video had on popular culture due to its uses of propaganda or double speak.

-Quote the lyrics where necessary

Note: Do not overwhelm the slides with words! (Put your developed ideas in the ‘notes’ section of the slides, while keeping the viewed portion visually clean with short phrases and organized by bullets.) Also, list any websites used at the end of your Powerpoint.

PART 2-ESSAY:

Compare and contrast the ways in which the two different music videos utilize propaganda techniques.

Write an essay analyzing how the propaganda/doublespeak/loaded words used in these videoshave the power to change, shift, or enforce the current culture of their audiences.

The essay should be at least four paragraphs in length. These are suggested topics to address when writing this essay:

--What was the function of the propaganda?

--What cultural ideologies was the propaganda perpetuating or transforming?

--What is a specific example of how these ideologies could potentially affect the life of an individual?

--How could they also affect the culture of the viewers at large?

--What does this show you about propaganda and doublespeak as a whole?

--What is the importance of learning how to identify these devices and learning how they operate in the world of entertainment?

Note: Be sure to attribute the three in-class articles when referenced in your essay (According to Lutz,…).
