Meeting Summary Report

May 30, 2013

The following is a summary of the current activities of the Recreation Board:

Invited Guests–Kay McLane presented materials on Interior Design. She currently runs a 5 week course two hours weekly in Lower Macungie & East Penn SD. She suggested doing a course in September or January. John Tunney of Trout Unlimited is willing to offer a free fly fishing program in the spring. Melissa Fugazzotto also attended and proposed Boot Camp in the Park with varying activities. The recreation board will work on establishing fee structures and guidelines for program instructors at the next meeting.

Community Programs Scheduled

Night of Magic – April 26th – 64 attended. The community wants more family programs like this.

Pet CPR & First Aide – May 25th from 9-12:30pm – The class was full (8 attended with great feeback).

Junior Golf Lessons – May 1st-29th – 10 registered for the spring class and 3 are registered for the summer.

Tennis Clinics - April 2ndto May 2nd and May 7th to June 6th – 23 participated in the April 2nd class and 33participated in the May 7th class. Two additional summer programs were added July 9th to August 8th and August 20th to September 19th. Beginner & Intermediate classes will be limited to 20.

Summer Pick-up Volleyball – June 2nd to end of August from 6-8pm at Upper Macungie Park. Anticipate large attendance based on feedback. April will work on Middle School Volleyball clinics.

Family Fishing- June 8th & July 20th– 21 signed up in June and 8 in July.

Movies in the Park – June 14th, July 12th, Aug 9th – $3,350 raised.Still need more sponsors. A special Flag day event schedule includes UMTPD and bands playing 3 patriotic songs on June 14th.

Geocaching –September 14th – still need GPS units and have not heard from Jennifer Trambore. Rich will contact Chuck and April will contact Cabella’s for units.

Tree Care –scheduled October 1st

Psychic Medium – scheduled October 10th

Barktoberfest – October 19th RD 20th–10 vendors participating & 2 sponsors contributed totaling $1000. Rich Kiser will be McGruff the Crime Dog. Still looking for more vendors and sponsors.

5K Run/Walk for Parks – Jeff Vitelli attended the meeting on behalf of the 5K committee. Presenting sponsor will still be Amazon. Documents will be forwarded and included on the township website. Logo will be slightly changed this year and revamped next year. Sponsors and donation are requested.

Hunter/Trapper –has been scheduled for November 10th.

AARP Safe Driver’s Course – 8 hr course scheduled on November 12th & 14th and the refresher course on November 13th.

Community Programs Proposed/New

Kids Crafts at Breinigsville Park – Tabled.

Boot Camp in the Park – Full Circle Training. Tabled.

Penn State Extension Programs – Composting is a popular program. A Spring or Garden Fest next Spring is tabled.

Bird Watching – Scott Burnet would like to do a Beginner Bird program at one of our parks. April will prepare a proposal.

Adult Fall Golf Lessons – Tabled

Old Business

Dog Park Completion/Status – Rich presented us with a check from the girl scouts in the amount of $468.38. Dog letter donations have totaled $825 (an additional $345 since the thermometer went up.) Jim will raise the thermometer to $1,000.

Breinigsville Baseball Fields – Tabled

Grange Road Splash Park/Amphitheatre–No updates on the splash park. Jim Adams to look into Amphitheatre.

Independent Park Community Center –5 additional rentals last month. No progress with completion of the downstairs until BLPD auction is finished.

Wedding Packages/Requests - Tabled

New Business

Program Payments –Barktoberfest payments and expenses will go through the Friends account. If the event is not a 501c3 event the payments go into the Rec fund.

Park Updates –Grange playground completion has been delayed due to the rain. The Eagle Scouts will help with a sign at Apple Ponds.

Monthly Meetings - The Recreation Board holds its meetings on the last Thursday of each month. The next meeting of the Recreation Board will be held on Thursday, June 27that 7:00pm at the Township Building.
