Original name Ging Mountney.

1601. Relief to paupers only in parish of legal settlement. (1 month long)

1601-1834 Levying of a poor rate and distribution by the overseers to the needy.

A copy of the parish registers of Mountnessing was written in order in a clear hand and with remarks at the end lamenting the loss of the previous records. These records started in1654 in accordance with the law passed during the Rebellion which placed the registration of births, marriages and burials in the hands of a Lay Register. Previous records may be held by the Petre family.

1665 Third plague of seventeenth century. “We do not know how they fared in this parish during this dreadful visitation but it was very bad in Chelmsford.” No burials recorded 1664-1678

1678 Woollen act

1707 John Salmon came armed with a “Certificate,” probably from the Rector of his own parish.

1723 40 families lived here. Essex at Work A.F.J. Brown Pub. ECC 1967

1737 Four wandering people buried.

1775. Vicar John Newman.

1866 Vicar Thomas Martin Ready.

1867 Weather being very severe distributed 5 tons of coal at twenty four shillings to 16 widows and 12 large families.

1867 Sun. 8th Dec. As the weather at this season of the year deters people from attending the ParishChurch, with the Bishops full consent, the Vicar commenced afternoon service in the village school room. To be kept on until after Easter. Mr. Isaac Crush, the Parish Churchwarden, strongly objected to this innovation. The people were pleased with it.

1873 The Vicar felt how inconvenient it was for aged people to get from the village to the ParishChurch (2 miles) and indeed for all classes in bad weather. An Iron church seating 250+was opened May 4th 1873.

1873. Addition to the school for 40 more children to meet the requirements of the 1870 Education Act.

1874. Charities. £22 distributed in bread for the poor residents-given fortnightly in winter. Charity school.

1875 Start of long depression in agriculture due to import of cheap American wheat.

1877 First Schoolmaster, Mr. Henry Watson was appointed. Previous to this the school had been run by the Misses Alexander assisted by their niece, Miss Silversides. An inspector reported that needlework was especially well taught. The teachers were paid £20 per annum but Miss Silversides received nothing.

1884 A Reading Room was opened, with members paying one shilling a quarter. It was hoped that it would keep the inhabitants out of the public houses.

1885 Vicar Macnamara tried to get the labourers good cottages to live in. Some were demolished and comfortable red brick buildings were put up by Lord Petre.Waterloo Cottages next to the Weslyan chapel were repaired. Isabel Doe, daughter of Darby and Hannah Wright lived at 4, Waterloo Cottages in 1903. Leonard Wright lived at No. 3 in 1907.
