“It is only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here
was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.”(Lk 15:32)

This Sunday Luke's Gospel is about the parable of the Prodigal Son, a parable we are all familiar with. Through this parable Jesus responds to the Pharisees and the scribes who complained that 'this man (Jesus) welcomes sinners'. Tax collectors and the like were social outcasts and it disturbed the Pharisees to find Jesus associating with them. Jesus uses the parable to teach them about the generosity, mercy and unconditional love of the Father. Some of the Pharisees were self-righteous and blind to their own sinfulness. The parable is a story of conversion and how forgiveness and reconciliation can change our attitudes and our whole lives. We cannot change if have no awareness of what we need to change. The younger son, came to realize that his selfish actions caused pain and hurt to his father. He was remorseful and came back to say he was sorry. He accepted responsibility for his action - saying sorry takes humility. His father never gave up on him and welcomed him back with great joy and generosity despite what he had done. What a great gift it is to be loved and forgiven even when do not deserve it. That is God's unconditional love for each and
every one of us. Like the Pharisees we can go through life pointing out
everyone else's faults and not seeing the plank in our own eye. It can lead
to being unforgiving, resentful and self-righteous. During Lent let us take a look at our lives, our relationship with others and especially our relationship with God. Use the Sacrament of Reconciliation to ask God to forgive us our sins and for the grace to help us imitate Him in our mercy and forgiveness towards others.

(A Column for the less than pious)

Somebody is taking care of Nancy Kate’s hooves. It gives Dan the Donkey a chance to go down to the gate to have a chat with cousin Donal from the next field. “I had the strangest dream”, says Dan. “I was taken back in time to when Cromwell came to these shores. There I was on a frosty night with a full moon rising. It was near Christmas and the ground was rock hard from a frost which had lasted for days. A chill wind was blowing from the north-west and I found myself alone taking shelter near a thatched Stradbally church and nearby was a scattering of dimly lit cabins. The moon was large that night and then the silence of the countryside was broken not by a dog barking but by the lonesome howl of wolf from Stradbally mountain. My panic turned to shivering and my thoughts were everywhere. That lonesome howl was answered within moments by others far up the mountain and then an eerie silence. A pack of wolves nearby. Were they on the prowl? It had been years since they came this way. Hunger must be driving them. Here I am in the open, should I go somewhere, perhaps to the north side of the church where I will not be seen. Then the howls are heard again from the same place and from the same direction………..(to be continued)

What counts above all else is “Faith working through Love”. Works of love directed to one’s neighbour are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit.
