Entrance Antiphon

When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 91

Be with me, O Lord, when I am in distress.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,
and abides in the shade of the Almighty,
says to the Lord, “My refuge,
my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!”
Upon you no evil shall fall,
no plague approach your tent.
For you has he commanded his angels
to keep you in all your ways.
They shall bear you upon their hands,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
On the lion and the viper you will tread,
and trample the young lion and the serpent.
Since he clings to me in love, I will free him,
protect him, for he knows my name.
When he calls on me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in distress;
I will deliver him, and give him glory.
Be with me, O Lord, when I am in distress. /

Gospel Acclamation

Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

Communion Antiphon

One does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society- Grab a bag Project - Escourt/Bergville 2013

During Lent the SVDP is preparing for its annual Grab-A-Bag Project which supplies food and blankets to the poor impoverished communities in the Escourt and Bergville area assisted by the Catholic missions in those areas. Last year saw 1500 blankets and 15 tons of maize meal plus 1.5 tons of beans at a cost of over R160000.00 as well as a huge supply of second hand clothes delivered and this year we would like to at least equal or improve on last year as the need in these areas is unlimited and with winter coming, a warm blanket and food on the table offers some comfort to those who live in extreme poverty and who endure tremendous hardship and incurable sickness (especially AIDS ) every day of their lives.

We want to give these poor people a bit of hope and help the children living in these families. The SVDP is asking you to contribute R120.00 (which we have kept the same as last year despite a huge increase in food prices) for the cost of a blanket and the equivalent of around 20kgof maize meal plus a bag of beans which we will deliver in bulk quantities to Bergville/Escourt just after Easter on Saturday 13 April 2013.

The SVDP needs to order and in some cases pay in advance and this will cost more than SVDP has available, so we need to receive as much money as soon as possible. We are starting to collect money from Sunday 17 February after all Masses until Easter and we appeal to you to consider what you can afford to donate as a Lenten gift to those in need. Also if you have any second-hand clothes (especially warm clothes) that we could take to Escourt and Bergville could you please drop these at the Parish Office.

If you would like to make a contribution directly into our bank account, the details are as follows:

Bank: First National Bank

Branch: Durban North Branch Code: 20426

Account Holder: Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Account No: 62033860786

A Tax Certificate for all donations exceeding R500 per year can be supplied upon request. Any queries can be made at the Parish office or email :

First Sunday of Lent Year C
17th February 2013 Lawrence Frizzell
Commentary
First Reading (Deut 26:4-10). The Book of Deuteronomy presents two long sermons of Moses just before his death (chapters 1-11), followed by a code of laws (chapters 12-26) and a covenant-ceremony at the entry into the promised Land. This was completed by Moses’ farewell addresses, including a song and blessing of the twelve tribes. Joshua and Caleb (the two spies who encouraged an early entry into the Land) are the only ones surviving from the Exodus to make the transition to the new stage of Israel’s service of the one God. All the others were born during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness.
