Today’s Scripture:

As the Israelites journey through the desert, Moses provided them with the life-saving gift of ordinary water. Jesus, the new Moses, gives the people something infinitely better namely “living water”, a share in the very life of God. The woman of Samaria comes to the well at the brightest part of the day and will come to believe in Jesus. They begin by speaking of some of their deepest thirsts: for worship, salvation and the search for truth. They begin to let go of their ingrained prejudices of each other; they stayed talking and did not give up when they stumbled over their differences. She went through a powerful inner transformation. Christ meets us where we are. He says to us ‘if you only knew the gift God wants to give.’

Sunday, 27th March (3rd Sunday of Lent) “If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you: Give me a drink, you would have been the one to ask, and He would have given you living water.” Do you feel called to the Priesthood?

Lent 2011
1 / Fasting - use the Trōcaire family fast box. / Fasting, Prayer, Almsgiving
Christians throughout history have found these to be the building blocks of Lenten Spiritual growth. They help us both cleanse our lives of what distracts us from God, and that new space, in turn, gives God’s grace more room to take root and flourish.
FASTING:
The wisdom of the ages, across religions, has found power in fasting. When we give up something we make a sacrifice. This sacrifice helps us in many ways a way to express sorrow for our sins it teaches us that we don’t need those things to be happy it prepares us for greater sacrifices we will be called on to make further down the road it is a way of expressing solidarity. Jesus showed us that sacrifice is at the core of genuine love.
Almsgiving:
Jesus poured out his life for others. As disciples, we are called to do the same in our everyday lives. Keep the Corporal Works of Mercy in mind: don’t forget the hungry, show hospitality to those in need, be welcoming to those you meet, visit the sick, visit a cemetery, pray for the dead.
