Parish Council News
It may be a little late, but all members of the Council wish every resident of the Village a happy and prosperous new year.
Things have been quiet so far this year, with developments upon the new solar farm and the new chicken farm at Wyton both awaiting further news upon the commencement of any work.
The Council have considered the precept for 2016/17 and are pleased to advise residents that the parish precept has been set unchanged again this year.
Council activities:
(1)Speed sign in Holmes Lane now re-installed. (2) Parish flagpole damaged in the pre-Christmas storms now replaced free of charge (3) Christmas again saw the village decorated and our thanks are given to Lee Sims who was good enough to organise the tree. We are currently looking at whether it is viable to plant a permanent live tree to be used for future years.
Visitors to the Burial ground in the new year may see our contractor cutting the grass with a new sit-on mower, which the Council have purchased, and with the time saved and a reduced contract negotiated it will pay for itself over the next three years.
We are still awaiting the allocation of a “volunteer” under the Community service scheme which will give us the opportunity to make small improvements to the village. If anyone has any suggestions for work he can be considered for please contact Mr Stephen Dale, Parish Clerk.
The Parish Council are please to confirm that the following grants have been made.
Bilton Village Hall, new kitchen £2,200
Yorkshire Air Ambulance £250
British Red Cross, Emergency Vehicle Appeal £250
The Village Hall are looking to put an event on to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. Other events we are looking to establish are an indoor bowling facility (if a bowler is prepared to come forward to organise). In May we are hoping to begin afternoon bingo sessions, with entertainment included.Keep a look out for any start date. It would be helpful however if people interested in joining could let us know in advance.
MP Visits Bilton
In February the Parish Council invited Mr Graham Stuart to visit our office to inspect the work done in the preparation of dealing with an emergency. He was shown our emergency centre’s readiness and inspected the container holding our supply of sandbags and sand for distribution. The Chair of the Council has recorded his thanks to the ERYC for both technical and financial support over the years. He also wished to thank Mr John Maston, Chair of the South Holderness Drainage Board for his unstinting support in ensuring our preparedness for possible flooding.
Is there a willing volunteer who is a calligrapher and willing to use their skills to upkeep our burial book for anyone wishing to spread ashes in the remembrance garden? Again if interested please contact the Parish Clerk.
WHAT HAPPENED TO PRIDE
We know parking can sometimes be an issue but why do some residents think they have a right to run their vehicles over kerb edges and grassed verges to gain access to their property, or park their vehicles on grassed verges?
These grassed verges belong to East Riding Council not residents and buried within these grassed areas are the utilities and services we rely on.
Parking on grassed areas is becoming a persistent problem around the village, add to this the excessive amounts of rainfall witnessed over the past few months and the result is unsightly mud patches for the rest of us parishioners to look at whilst travelling around the village.
Continued running over kerb edges is destroying the concrete kerb and the tyres are causing deep ruts in the verge which will still be visible through the summer months, even possibly causing a trip hazard to pedestrians.
If these minority residents require their vehicle parked close to their property they should pay for dropped kerbs and a run up to their property just like many residents have already done.
On the other hand why don't residents use their garages, reducing the number of vehicles parked up overnight?
As a Parish Council and with limited resources we are always looking at ways to improve our community so let’s stop this practice and together lets be proud of our village.

APPEAL
Spinal Injuries Association
"Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury"
Great British Fish and Chip Supper - Friday 20 May 2016
Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 20th May 2016 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting S IA's vital services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Just £50 could contribute towards the support from our Peer Support Service for one hour, in a district general hospital or Major Trauma Centre.
In 2016 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,000 from the suppers.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, "The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group”.
For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 0714350 or email or visit www. siafishandchips .co.uk
ATTENTION ANY BOWLERS or TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS
Attempts are being made to begin hosting indoor bowls and Table tennis, if sufficient people come forward to assist running these events. No further details are available, as this is an appeal to establish any interest in the village

INTRODUCING THE NEW VICAR AT St Peter’s
As I write I have been Priest-in-Charge (Vicar) at St Peter’s for almost five months. This, as some of you will know, is in addition to being the Vicar of St Michael’s on Holderness Road and Area Dean of East Hull. Clearly I have plenty to keep me occupied! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you feel I can be of any help (Telephone: 374509 or email: ).
As far as the church is concerned, the major festival of Easter is at the end of March. There will be a quiet, meditative service at 12 noon, lasting an hour, on Good Friday (25th March) as we recall Jesus’ love for us as he died on the cross. On Easter Sunday, at 9.15am we shall gather to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and defeat of death. It would be good to welcome you!
At a recent meeting of the Parochial Church Council we heard how 70% of Bilton’s ecclesiastical parish population said that they were ‘Christian’ (2011 Census), that’s about 3,000 people – many, many more than are in St Peter’s on a Sunday! Perhaps Easter is the time to pack the church.
In addition, the Archbishop of York is undertaking a pilgrimage through the Diocese of York and will be in our area during Holy Week (22nd – 27th March). He will be at the church at 8.30am on Thursday, 24th March for ‘Pilgrimage Prayers’. At 7.30pm he will be here again to give a special talk for Good Friday, and on Holy Saturday morning he will be walking through Bilton to the church (probably around 11.00am) before going on to Longhill Estate. Do take the opportunity to meet him.
One last thing: something about me! I am a widow; I have two adult daughters in Birmingham and Edinburgh. When I am not working, I enjoy walking, natural history especially birding and botany, music and cooking.
With my prayers and blessing.
Maggie (The Reverend Maggie Jeavons)

VILLAGE HALL NEWS
Since the last newsletter it’s been fairly busy at the hall, not only planning 2016 events but also planning improvements to the hall and the fields.
To start us off we would like to say a massive thank you to the Bilton Parish Council for giving us the opportunity through a grant to install a beautiful new kitchen to replace our dated and close to falling apart old kitchen. A grant of £2200 was awarded to us by the Parish Council and also a blessing was given to us by Paul Spence of the charity ‘PAUL For Brain Recovery’ to use some of the funds we raised in our partnership with them at last year’s successful Bilton Festival. On behalf of the committee we would like to thank both the Bilton Parish Council and Paul Spence from the bottom of our hearts for helping us provide some new and fabulous facilities. Thank you!! The hirers and users of the hall have a new kitchen for preparation of drinks and snacks during their sessions. It will be a great asset to the numerous parties and events we have going on throughout the year.
As you all will have seen a few years ago the hedges were taken out from the front of the hall and some fencing installed in its place. Having the park installed the committee felt it was best to remove the hedges and replace with the fence that would allow the fields to be open and transparent in the interests of safety. Retrospective planning permission was applied for recently to which we understand lots of people liked the hedges and expressed their feelings to both ourselves and the planning department at the East Riding Council. The council have awarded planning permission for the fence and as a gesture to the local community we would like to improve the ‘streetscene’ along the fence. At the same time we was granted planning permission a grant was made available to us from Yorkshire Water Saltend Treatment Plant for the local community. Our aim is to plant some shrubs and plants along the front of the fence heading down towards Asda. This project will be starting shortly and we welcome any views or concerns anyone may have. We would like to say a big thank you to Yorkshire Water for the very kind offer of a grant.
