Dive Into Reading

Parents As Reading Partners – PARP 2013

PARP is an enrichment program sponsored by the CH PTA. PARP – Parents As Reading Partners is a collaborative effort among parent, teacher, and the community to build a strong reading partnership between home and school. Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. Therefore, the two P’s in PARP are the major ingredients essential to making it a successful program.

This year the theme is “Dive Into Reading”! PARP week is March 11-15 and concludes with a PARP party on Monday the 18 during lunch. Our goal is to have all the students at Charlton Heights read with a reading partner, for a minimum of 15 minutes a day. Please record on the reading record each time you read and the amount of minutes you have read. We will be having a competition between the classes in each grade to see which class has read the most minutes during PARP week. The winning class for each grade will be presented with a new book for their classroom! Any reading while not in the classroom counts. Encourage your student to read different things. We have included fun ideas to try for each day of PARP.

Friday, March 8 – Please start to record all reading that way it gives the students a whole week to rack up the minutes!

Monday, March 11 – Author Karen Board will be doing a workshop for grades K, 1, and 2! Author, Illustrator and publisher Sharon Swain will be giving an assembly for grades 3, 4, and 5. They are both from Burnt Hills and Sharon has a 5th grader here at Charlton Heights! We hope everyone takes advantage of purchasing their very own signed copy of the many books they have to offer.

Tuesday, March 12–Please bring in 2 - 4 gently used books (one for the swap and the rest for donation.) There will be grade level bins in the main entrance for the rest of the week to collect books. Collection will end on Friday the 15th. On Monday we will have book swap. Each student will receive one book and the rest will be donated to Lincoln Elementary School in Schenectady.

Wednesday, March 13 – Wear blue today! Show that you are participating in PARP and encourage others to keep reading!

Thursday, March 14 – Turn off the electronics day! Spend some time with family playing a game or trying out a new recipe together! Parent lets show our kids we can all survive without T.V., texting, email and video games.

Friday, March 15– Reading Records Due! Please help us out by totaling the number of minutes read. There will be a folder in each class for the students to turn in their reading records. They won’t get credit toward the competition if they aren’t turned in today. Sorry, no exceptions. If your student is absent please try to drop it off by the end of the school day. We will need to calculate the totals over the weekend in order to present the prizes on Monday.

Monday, March 18 – PARP party during lunch! Students are welcome to sport some tropical themed outfits for our beach themed party! Each student will get a book from the book swap, popsicle and we will announce the winning class for the reading challenge!

*Bonus School Wide Principle Challenge! If the whole school reads a total of 500 hours during PARP Mr. Sinnenberg will have a special surprise for everyone! The kids are sure to love it!

*If your child is in Kindergarten they will receive their books in the classroom as well as a popsicle.

During the week we would like to have 100% participation! Attached you will find the reading record. Please remember to turn it in on Friday, March 15.
