How to request an internal review

  1. You are entitled to seek a review if an application for enrolment at a special school has been refused.
  1. In order to properly assess your application for review of this decision you should explain why you disagree with it and provide any additionalinformation to support your argument.
  2. It is desirable that your submission makes reference to additional information regarding:
  • your child’s educational needs
  • why you consider the special school to be the most appropriate program to meet these needs
  • any other relevant information you may choose.
  1. The attachedtemplate should be usedto write a review submission.
  2. You may ask other persons not employed by Department of Education and Training (DET)(e.g. medical specialists/external therapists) to assist you in preparing a submissionor relevant DET employees who were not involved in the original decision.
  3. If you wish to make a verbal submission, a qualified DET officer can be made available to take notes and produce an agreed written record. To arrange this, please contact the:
  • Principal Education Officer, Student Services in the relevant region (for a special school which is notan Independent Public School). Regional contact details can be accessed at or
  • Principal Advisor, State Schools (for a special school which is an Independent Public School) by email at .
  1. You have 30 school days from being given the Information noticethat your application to enrol your child at the special school was not successful,to seek a review. If necessary, longer timelines need to be negotiated with DET through the contact details, as outlined in the original application,prior to the expiration of this timeframe.
  2. When considering your request, the delegated review decision-maker (Regional Director or Assistant Director-General, State Schools)will consider issues such as:
  • Whether your child is a person with a disability in accordance with the Ministerial policy approved under Section 165 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006(Qld); and
  • Whether the special school to which the enrolment application was made is able to cater for the educational needs of your child.
  1. After consideration of your application, the delegated review decision-makerwill provide you with a decision in writing forwarded to the address or email indicated in the internal review submission.
