999 GREENBAY ROAD

GLENCOE, ILLINOIS

**ENTER FROM REAR PARKING LOT**

2014-15 SERIES

SUNDAYS, SEPTEMBER 21, OCTOBER 26, NOVEMBER 16, 2014 and

JANUARY 25, FEBRUARY 15, MARCH 15, APRIL 19, 2015

2:00-5:00 P.M.

In this series we bring together cinema and psychoanalysis. The artistry of cinema is an ideal medium for illustrating and discussing the deep emotional issues that constitute the life-blood of psychoanalysis. Each year we will select films that allow exploration of a broad range of issues relevant to our times. Topics will include intimacy, love, alienation, family dynamics, coming of age, sexuality, and others.

Film showings followed by discussion will take place on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Each film will be discussed by a different member of the Institute for Psychoanalysis.

COST: $20 per film or $125 for the series.

Series Moderator: Neurine Wiggin, Psy.D.

Sept 21: THE GIRL IN THE CAFÉ (2013)

James Fisch, M.D., discussant

What happens when a soulless, government number cruncher meets an unknown woman in a coffee shop as he is preparing to attend a G8 summit on world poverty? Humanity trumps politics. .

Oct 26: TEMPLE GRANDIN (2010)

Michael Grover, M.D., discussant

It is a rare child and mother who can conquer autism together, especially when both are close to being driven crazy by its day-to-day symptoms. Temple Grandin, Ph.D., diagnosed at two years with autism, and now 67, is a well-known writer, lecturer and animal husbandry expert. Her life is powerfully depicted by Claire Danes.

Nov 16: THE LATE QUARTET (2012)

Eva Lichtenberg, Ph.D. and Arnold Tobin, M.D.

Could this film – about the crisis a 25-year quartet faces when the leader develops Parkinson’s disease – be as much about a “family” at a turning point? A father declines causing sibling rivalries and buried conflicts to emerge. Roger Ebert called this film a showcase for the actors’ talents.

Jan 25: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN (2012)

Neurine Wiggin, Psy.D., discussant

Sixto Rodriguez, so named because he was the sixth child born to his immigrant parents in Detroit, experienced all the bad luck that he could be expected to endure. Yet his music spoke to other musicians and, unknown to Rodriguez, was beloved by white South Africans in the days before the end of apartheid. Though his songs were bootlegged and royalties pocketed by others, Rodriguez maintained his honesty and humanity through obscurity and fame.

Feb 15: THIS IS MARTIN BONNER (2013)

Phil Lebovitz, M.D., discussant

Who is Martin Bonner? Martin’s life in his 50’s, when most have made peace with themselves, warts and all, is as much a work in progress as the newly-released prisoners he counsels. The characters in this film are immersed in reality with few defenses to hide behind.

Mar 15: THE INTOUCHABLES (2012)

David Terman, M.D., discussant

Based on a true story, a wealthy man who became a quadriplegic after a paragliding accident chooses an unlikely “bodyman”/caretaker to be his daily companion. It might be said that he maintained his identity by projecting his needs and wishes onto a stranger.

Apr 19: CARNAGE (2011)

Joshua Kellman, M.D., discussant

Two boys get in a fight on the playground and their parents meet to deal with the issue of their violence in a civilized manner. Instead, their own aggression and selfishness emerge, leaving their children to cope on their own. Adapted from Yasmina Reya’s play “God of Carnage.”
