Welcome and Introductions

  • Linnett Schmidkunz introduced herself as the Title I Coordinator for the district.
  • Tara Rennerintroduced as the Title I Family Involvement Coordinator for the district.
  • Michelle Svihovec introduced herself as the ELL Director.
  • Title I parent involvement coordinators at each school introduced themselves.
  • Parents introduced themselves and what school their children attend.
  • Brochures were made available for parents (What is Title I, Parent Involvement Budgets, and the Parent Involvement Policy, Welcome Center, and ELL).

Program Descriptions

  • LinnettSchmidkunz reviewed the Title I Parent Brochure and addressed what is Title I.
  • Michele Svihovec reviewed Title III information, ELL, and explained how services are offered in every school. She talked about the Welcome Center and how they serve students throughout the district.

Purpose of District Parent Advisory Council

  • Tara Renner reviewed the purpose of the PAC council which is to review and update the District Parent Involvement Policy and to look at Parent involvement budgets in each school.

Review and Update of the District Parent Involvement Policy

  • Linnett Schmidkunzintroduced the District Title I Parental Involvement Policy for the Bismarck Public Schools.
  • Parent Advisory Council(PAC) members looked at the District Parental Involvement Policy and worked in groups to address each section of the policy. A few minor wording changes were made to the policy.
  • Some things that were noted were wording changes from parent involvement coordinators to Title I staff/specialist/coordinators.
  • Another was that we should add that many newsletters are given to parents from the welcome center in many different languages.
  • A change was made to have a link in the policy on the Title I parent website.

Parent Involvement Budgets per Title I school

  • Tara Renner reviewed the Title I allocation that each school received for the 2015-2016 school year and what each school used the parent involvement money on.

Suggestions for Parent Involvement activities-School and District

  • Possibly have parent involvement celebrations for volunteers in schools.
  • Barnes and Nobles events.
  • Look at different times of events to increase attendance.
  • Maybe have a library event.
  • Make and Take projects for parents like self regulation tool.
  • Have events after/before a parent night like music, PTO, and etc.
  • Have theme’s attached to parent nights.

Ending and Closing

  • PAC parents were given opportunities to ask questions and offer feedback.
  • Meeting adjourned at 12:50pm.
