Lesson Summary — Lecture Notes

Lesson 4 focuses on how students can use Word’s formatting features to change the appearance of a paragraph.

Begin by covering the formatting options found on the Indents and Spacing tab of the Paragraph dialog box.As you discuss the indentation options, demonstrate examples of first-line, hanging, and negative indents in documents. Point out how students can set and clear indents from the ruler (you may need to show students how to show/hide the horizontal ruler). Discuss the alignment options found on the Paragraph tab and how the horizontal alignments can be change using the keyboard or the Paragraph dialog box. Also, discuss how the vertical alignments options are found in the Page Setup dialog box. Step-by-step instructions are provided in this lesson.

You may want to discuss why it is helpful to show non-printing characters in a document during editing. Make sure students know they can also press the Ctrl and asterisk buttons to display these characters.

Ensure that students understand how to set the line spacing within a paragraph and the line spacing around a paragraph. Also, that students understand they can change the line spacing and spacing around a paragraph in the Paragraph dialog box and in the Paragraph group using the Line and Paragraph Spacing. Demonstrate changing line spacing using the keyboard shortcuts.

Next, demonstrate how to create a bulleted and numbered list. Show students how they can turn off the automatic bulleting in Backstage. Discuss how lists are created in Word.

Finally, explain how to set, move, and clear tabs from the ruler and using the Tabs dialog box. Show students how to open the Tabs dialog box by clicking any tab stop on the ruler, then discuss the tab options found on this dialog box (be sure to cover the different tab leaders available). Demonstrate how to reset the default tab stop. Students should know how to clear tabs both from the ruler and from the Tabs dialog box.
