PAPER - A (THEORY)

Max. Marks: 100 Lectures: 75

Pass Marks: 35% in the subject Time allowed: 3 Hrs

(Theory and Practical separately)

Note: Along with Gurmat Sangeet, the candidate can also take Instrumental Music/Tabla as other elective subjects.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER-SETTER

(i) The question paper will consist of five sections: A, B, C, D & E. Section A, B, C & D will have two questions from the respective sections of the syllabus and will carry 15 marks each. Section E will consist of 10 short answer type questions which will cover the entire syllabus uniformly and will carry 40 marks in all.

(ii) While sending the syllabus to Paper Setter the syllabus prescribed for Practical Paper should also be sent.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES

Candidates are required to attempt one question each from the sections A, B, C & D of the question paper and the entire section E.

SECTION - A

1. Technical Terminology:

(a) Poorav Raag, Uttar Raag, Ashraya Raag, Sur Malikaa, Janak Raag, Janya Raag, Anuvadi, Vivadi, Kan, Meend, Murki.

(b) Torhha, Tukrhha, Tihaaee, Paltaa, Thaa, Doon, Lagee.

(c) Gaurhee Prakaar, Dakhnee Prakaar, Keertaniyaa, Shabad Reet, Pade.

2. Contribution of Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Arjun Dev Ji, Hargobind Sahib Ji in the development of Gurmat Sangeet Tradition.

SECTION - B

1. Elements of Keertan Chouki Tradition in Gurmat Sangeet.

2. Keertan Chauki tradition in the Sikh way of life.

3. Keertankaars of Guru Period.

SECTION - C

1. Detailed description of the prescribed Ragas in comparison to their

samparakritik Ragas with notation :

Gujri, Todi, Suhi, Wadhans, Bihagra, Sarang, Dhanasri.

2. Detailed description with notation of prescribed Talas with layakaries:

Jhaptaal, Sultaal, Deepchandi, Punjabi-Thheka,Teentaal.

SECTION - D

Introduction of the following in English:

1. Guru Nanak Dev Ji

2. Bhai Mardana Ji

3. A Ragas or Talas prescribed in the syllabus

(i) Hazoori Gayan - 50 marks (iii) Tanti Saaz - 15 marks

(ii) Viva - 20 marks (iv) Taal Saaz - 15 marks

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER-SETTER

(i) There should not be more than eight students in a batch for practical examination.

(ii) Harmonium is allowed as an accompaniment. Weightage will be given to be students reciting Shabad Kirtan along with string instruments of Gurmat Sangeet.

(iii) Separate practical paper should be set from practical Paper B of prescribed syllabus.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES

Note: - It is mandatory to have knowledge of Ragas of previous year's syllabi. Harmonium is allowed as an accompaniment. Weigtage will be given to the students reciting Shabad Keertan along with string instruments of Gurmat Sangeet.

1. Introduction of Ragas prescribed in the syllabus: Gujri, Todi, Suhi, Wadhans, Bihagra, Sarang, Dhanasri.

2. Keertan of 9th to 16th Chhants of Asaa Di Vaar.

3. So-Dar Di Keertan Chouki.

4. One Shabad in each of the following Ragas:

Gujri, Todi, Suhi, Wadhans, Bihagraa, Sarang, Dhanasri.

5. Practical performance of Thheka of following Talas on Tabla and Hast Vidhi

with ekgun, dugun Layakaries - Jhaptaal, Sultaal, Deepchandi, Punjabi-Thheka,Teentaal.
