NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Women and Children’s Directorate – Acute Division

The RoyalHospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon

Applications are invited for two full time Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.

The successful candidates will be expected to develop subspecialist interests complementary to those of the current members of the department.

1. General Description of Children’s Services

Glasgow’s RoyalHospital for Sick Children was founded in 1883. Since 1971 it has been based in the Yorkhill district of the city and the name ‘Yorkhill’ has come to represent the hospital. It is one of the largest children’s hospitals in the United Kingdom and has served the local population of 900,000 and provided tertiary paediatric services to the 3 million people in the West of Scotland in addition to national services for bone marrow and renal transplantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, paediatric cardiac surgery and obstetric brachial plexus palsy. All major paediatric subspecialties and ancillary services are represented on the Yorkhill site.

The hospitals in Glasgow are undergoing reorganisation at present. From June 2014 Yorkhill will transfer to a purpose built children’s hospital adjacent to a new adult hospital on the site of the Southern General Hospital, making that site one of the largest teaching hospital campuses in Europe. The delivery of care for young people will be changing. Most Scottish hospitals, including Yorkhill, have traditionally accepted children up until their thirteenth birthdays. With the move to the New Children’s Hospital that age limit will be raised to the age of sixteen. It is anticipated that this will produce a significant increase in the workload of the Hospital. The appointment of two further Orthopaedic Consultants will be necessary to match that workload.

Yorkhill has strong research and educational links. The departments of Paediatric Surgery, Child Health, Human Nutrition and Child and Family Psychiatry of the University of Glasgow are based in the hospital. Links also exist with the Caledonian and StrathclydeUniversities. The Research and Development Department and the Department of Clinical Audit assist with research projects.

All diagnostic imaging facilities are available on site. All imaging from across Scotland can be viewed on the national PACS system. Electronic patient management and record system are being introduced.

2. The Orthopaedic Department

The Department of Paediatric Orthopaedics provides elective and emergency care for young people. The number of patients managed annually will increase with the move to the New Children’s Hospital (based on 2012-13 figures)

Outpatients

Yorkhill at present / Anticipated at New Children’s Hospital
New Elective / 1700 / 2800
Return Elective / 4100 / 5400
New Fracture / 1300 / 4000
Return Fracture / 3200 / 6200

Inpatients

Yorkhill at present / Anticipated at New Children’s Hospital
Day Cases / 300 / 400
Elective Cases / 450 / 550
Emergency Cases / 700 / 1100

There is seasonal fluctuation in the emergency workload. At present two hours of protected theatre time are available for trauma each weekday during the Summer and one hour in the Winter. With the increased workload at the new hospital there will be full morning dedicated trauma lists on each weekday. Additional space is available in the general emergency theatre. A laminar flow theatre is used for all elective surgery. Both the trauma and elective theatres at the New Children’s Hospital will have laminar flow.

Outpatient visitors are seen in the clinic area and a dedicated plaster room is used for Ponseti casting, DDH harness, frame adjustment and all other casting requirements.

The Consultant members of the Department at present have subspecialty interests in neuromuscular disease, obstetric brachial plexus palsy, limb reconstruction, arthrogryposis, metabolic bone disease, sarcoma, congenital upper limb anomalies and other regional conditions. Multidisciplinary clinics are run for these. The successful applicants will be expected to develop complementary interests. Given the changing pattern in the trauma workload, experience in adolescent trauma would be beneficial. At least one year’s fellowship experience in Children’s Orthopaedics will be essential. The posts will be based at the Children’s Hospital but may include time at the West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre (WESTMARC) which is on the same site as the New Children’s Hospital. This centre offers gait analysis, specialist seating and prosthetics.

Daily trauma meetings are used for business and teaching but there is also a dedicated teaching programme held during term time. This includes a journal club, case presentations, clinical audit and a clinicopathological conference. Current Consultants have strong links with the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society, the Scottish Paediatric Orthopaedic Club, the British Limb Reconstruction Society, the UK Clubfoot Consensus Group and the Scottish Sarcoma Group. Future appointees will be encouraged to form similar links.
