**** Draft Attendance****

All captains and/or co-captains are invited to attend the draft. If a captain is unable to attend, one substitute may attend in place of a missing captain, but you MUST email and let us know about any substitutes who will be sitting in. Draft volunteers will also be in attendance to set up, hand out Draft Passports, assist in the draft process, etc. Due to facility limitations, friends, siblings, children, pets, etc., are not allowed to the draft night festivities.

**** Rules for the Draft****

The draft will be similar to last year. There will be 5 live drafting rounds.

In the 1st round, you must pick a MALE player. The draft order is determined by the male captains’ rankings.

In the 2nd round, you must pick a FEMALE player. The draft order is determined by the female captains’ rankings.

In the 3rd-5th rounds, you may pick any available player. Both the 3rd and 4th round draft order will be based on the combined ranking of both captains in each pair, starting with the lowest combined ranking. The 5th round will use the reverse draft order, starting with the highest combined ranking. In other words, this round will "snake" back from highest to lowest rank.

You must draft or request at least one FEMALE in rounds 3rd-9th.

You may not draft or request a player or baggage group that will give you 7 or more women. Some teams will end up with 7 total women, but these teams will be determined by the availability of the first 6 women on their team.
If a player you are selecting has baggage, the baggaged player will be assigned a round cost from 1-9. Rounds 6-9 refer to the write-in rounds (described below). Baggage penalties will often cost one of these rounds.

Whatever round cost is assigned to a baggaged player, you lose that round pick for the baggage. If you already have someone in that round's slot, you lose the next lower pick.If that spot is taken, you will lose the next highest pick. Pay attention to baggage costs so you don’t lose unnecessary picks.

Example: You draft a player with R6 baggage, but you already drafted someone else with R6 baggage. The new player costs R7 instead. If R7 is filled, they cost an R5. If R5 is filled they cost an R8.

Caveats:

1.  If your captain’s baggage contains a female that costs you an R2, you may not draft a male in R1 that is baggaged with an R2 female.

2.  If you wish to draft a baggage chain in R1 or R2 that includes a player with an R3 cost, and that team's R3 slot is already filled (either from a captain's or R1 baggage), that player (with the R3 cost) will cost both the R4 and R5 slots. If a team has already filled their R3 and either R4 or R5 slots, they may not draft a chain including a player with an R3 penalty for their R1 or R2 pick.

3.  As described above, if a player’s defined penalty slot is not available, the closest available slot will be filled. In the event that two free slots are the same distance, the later slot will be filled.

4.  If there is anything that was overlooked by the Committee, we reserve the right to correct it on the fly if we feel letting it go would seriously affect the competitive balance of the league.

5.  New in 2012: Starting in R8 (so this should not affect anything on Draft Night), if there is a baggage group available, you may select them regardless of the number of available slots you have remaining.

**** Draft Process ****

There will be tables up front (by the MC) where you make your picks.

BRING YOUR PASSPORT TO THE DRAFT TABLE ALONG WITH THE NAME AND ID NUMBER OF YOUR PICK SO WE CAN ENTER YOUR PICK AND BAGGAGE. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR PASSPORT, YOUR TURN WILL BE SKIPPED UNTIL YOU PRESENT IT.

HAVE A BACKUP PICK IN CASE YOURS IS TAKEN WHILE STANDING IN LINE.

At the first table, you announce your proposed pick (including UID!), a draft night volunteer checks and verifies any baggage penalties or availability issues, and you confirm your pick.

At the second table, your pick is recorded onto your roster and announced over the PA system.

There will be a 40 second time limit for making your pick. If you haven't made a pick within 40 seconds of when the previous drafter verified their pick, you lose your turn and the next captain picks. By far the best way to avoid any trouble with the time limit is to have your pick prepared before you reach the first table – which means having a couple picks available in case the one you want is taken right before you.

**** The Post-Draft Write-In Process****

There are a total of four (4) rounds of "write-ins" after the draft. In almost all ways, the write-in rounds are an extension of the five (5) rounds at the draft. After the draft, a list of players available for writing-in will be published and you will submit a ranked list of desired players. We expect the list will be ready by the end of the week and you will be given approximately 72 hours (3 days) to complete your write-in requests. Be prepared to allot enough time toward the end of the week/over the weekend to get your requests ready.

Further details of the process will be supplied later.

**** The Social Round****

The Social Round was introduced to FPSL in 2010. The Social Round allows captains the opportunity to write-in a spirit pick, based on the following guidelines:

1.  The social round player must be an FPSL veteran, having played 2 or more consecutive FPSL seasons. Refer to the draft list for social round eligible players.

2.  The social round player is not already listed as one of your request round picks.

The concept behind the social round is to help ensure that veteran PADA players who may not get drafted or requested based on ultimate skill level but who bring spirit and other intangibles to a summer league team end up with captains who can appreciate that social round player and what he/she bring to the fields. Captains may submit a separate list of requested social round eligible players with their request round lists, or may choose not to submit a social round list at all. Social round players will be assigned to teams in a similar fashion to the request round assignments.

**** What You Should Bring****

·  Most importantly: Bring your *own printout* (or electronic version) of the draft list.

o  We will have *some* copies for reference, but because captains like to prepare in their own way, we think it's best to leave the printing to you.

·  Otherwise, just bring your fine, fine selves and a pen or pencil for filling out your passport.

·  If you wish, bring a laptop.

o  We can’t guarantee there will be enough outlets, so bring a power strip.

o  We believe there will be wireless internet available (no guarantee).

·  Bring an appetite. Dinner and beverages will be served during the duration of the draft.
