Codes of Conduct

Packing for the Normandy Trip

Please use the following guidelines when packing for the trip:

As students will be responsible for carrying their own luggage, it is advised that all students stick to bringing a small suitcase, which they can manage themselves.

In addition to their suitcase students are allowed one piece of hand luggage and, as we are travelling for a long time, they might also like to bring a pillow for the journey.

We strongly advise that you make a list of all items being packed and place a copy of the list in their luggage (taped inside the lid of the suitcase or inside a pocket is usually the best idea). This list can then also be used to help your child pack their suitcase for the return journey.

Please do not pack any sharp instruments (including scissors, tweezers, razors, nail clippers etc.). This includes sharp equipment in their pencil cases; please check before packing! Staff will have the necessary first aid equipment should the need arise.

Students should not bring aerosols on the trip. Roll-on or stick deodorant should prove suitable for all students.

Pocket money for the trip should be placed in envelopes (one for each day of the trip). The envelopes will be collected by a member of staff on the evening of departure. These envelopes need to be labelled clearly with:

  • Your child’s name
  • The day they are to be used
  • The amount enclosed

As our first meal will be on Monday evening students may need a small amount of money (GBP & Euros) to spend on the journey to purchase breakfast and drinks or they may wish to bring a packed breakfast and lunch to eat on route.

All medicines should be clearly labelled with your child’s name and when and how they are to be administered. All medication will be collected by a member of staff on the evening of departure.

If your child is taking any medication, prescribed or not, please update your EV4 form before our departure. Any medicines must be handed in to a member of staff before boarding the coach.

Please go through all of the Codes of Conduct in this handbook with your child prior to the trip.

Staff will check each student and their luggage onto the coach. Once on the coach students can sit with their friends.

Polite notice: As we need to get to Dover in good time we will depart as soon as all the students are seated; to assist in the smooth running of this could you please ensure that your son / daughter is at the school on time and we would be grateful if those parents waiting can stand back whilst the children are registered and checked onto the coach.

Itinerary

Monday 3rd July:Leaving Kirkby at 0500hrs, we aim to arrive at our destination at 1800hrs (local time). Students will need to have sufficient food or money for breakfast and lunch which can be consumed on the ferry or during a stop at a service station. Dinner will be served once rooms have been allocated and we’ve unpacked.

Tuesday 4th July: Our first day of visits will be all about French language and culture. France is well-known for the quality of the produce on its traditional markets. This morning we will be visiting a street market in Courseulles sur Mer where students will see a range of fresh, traditional products for sale. They will have the opportunity to pick up some souvenirs and speak some French to the stallholders. In the afternoon, we will be visiting a Norman based theme park.

Wednesday 5th July:The theme for today is 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. Our morning will be spent in Falaise and will include a visit to the Castle – the birthplace of William the Conqueror. During the afternoon we will be heading to Bayeux to see the famous tapestry which tells the story of the Battle of Hastings. Students are given a headset which guides them through every scene and tells them what to look for.

Thursday 6th July:Today’s theme is 1944 and the D-day landings. We will be visiting a number of sites which played a major part in the liberation of Europe at the end of World War II. This will include a visit to a 360° cinema which tells the story of how the battle for Normandy unfolded and the technology behind building a floating harbour to supply the troops. A visit to the American and British cemeteries will help the students to understand the enormity of the sacrifice made by so many to rid Europe of tyranny.

Friday 7th July:After breakfast students we will load up the coach and take our seats for our journey home. We will be travelling throughout the day and hope to be back at school for 21:00 (Please check the school website or Facebook feed for updates).

Evening Activities: Students will spend time in the classroom each evening in order to reflect on or prepare for the visits. There is a swimming pool which we can use but students may NOT access the pool area unless with a member of staff and in the presence of a qualified lifeguard. Games and activities will be organised on the beach but students may NOT access the beach without permission. There are tennis courts and a mini-golf course in the grounds which can be used by the students and there is a disco most evenings.

NB – Although the children are given some free time for shopping, it is within restricted zones and it is on the understanding that they stay in pairs or small groups and meet promptly at a given time.
