PACKAGE ASSIGNMENT 7/15

Total time of a package must be between 1:15 and 1:45. We deduct 5 points from stories that are longer than 1:45 That’s tape time, plus anchor intro and anchor tag.

1 Due June 22 and 23

2 Due June 29 and 30

Your finished story includes a written script and a file in Avid under iNews ID_pack1 or _pack2

The written script includes the anchor intro, the package “guts” and an anchor tag.

The purpose of your package assignments is to use all of the tools that you’ve learned in this class about good interviewing, reporting, writing, shooting and editing and pull them together into complete stories on tape.

Reporting:News value is worth 22 points for each package. All packages must have bites from more than one source. A one source package will be assessed a penalty(see broadcast score sheet).

Anchor introductions should include a lead and a way of introducing YOU the reporter.

In this class and at KOMU, your anchor intro includes the phrase, “KOMU8’s” (your name here) Gary Grigsby, etc.

Though different news organizations have different philosophies about anchor intros, most of us in the broadcast sequence agree that the phrase introducing the reporter should say something substantive, should flow naturally into your story and should help to explain your story focus or commitment. It should also give viewers a reason to care about your story without being cliché. Anchor intros are usually better as statements than as questions.

Anchor intros should not say: KOMU8’s Gary Grigsby reports.

KOMU8’s Gary Grigsby has more.

KOMU8’s Gary Grigsby was there.

These are what we call “throwaway” lines and reveal very little about the story.

Writing Process: Know what your first shot and last shot will be before you write your story. Make sure to reference that first shot in your package.

Editing Process: You’ll capture your voice on channel 1; lay your video & natural sound on channel 2 and your sound bites and standup if you have one on channel 1.

If you DO have natural sound (NAT SND) at the beginning of your story, bring it up full before we hear any of your voice but limit it to 3-4 seconds at the most.

Lay all voice soundtracks and sound bites in your story BEFORE you “cover” the rest of your story with video.

Voicing: Your SOT (package) ends with a proper out cue: Gary Grigsby, KOMU8-News, Columbia.

Improper out cues will receive a penalty.

Late packages will be assessed a 25 point penalty PER DAY so book your equipment early.

As a reminder, I will not accept work that is turned in more than a week after its due date.
