57600 McKenzie Hwy, McKenzie Bridge, OR 97413, 541-822-3381. Seasonal housing may be available at the ranger station located just outside the City of McKenzie Bridge. The beautiful McKenzie River Hwy is a 100 mile long corridor stretching between Sisters on the east and Springfield on the west. Renowned for fishing, the McKenzie River supports spring Chinook salmon, winter steelhead and summer steelhead as well as native rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout. The high lakes have been planted with brown and brook trout, making the McKenzie River Corridor an outdoor sports paradise. The West Cascades National Scenic Byway, has some of the most spectacular scenery in Oregon. The area includes the popular Terwilliger Hot Springs, Sahalie Falls, Clear Lake, and Hoodoo Ski Area. ABOUT THE POSITION

35% - As a crewmember or leader, provides leadership and direction to a 5 person Youth Cpnservation Corps (YCC) Crew of 15-18 year old youth. Duties include leading the crew and performing a variety of resource management projects in wildlife, botany, watershed, fisheries, recreation, timber stand improvement, reforestation, fire, and others.

Responsibilities include distributing the workload among enrollees, checking status and progress of work and making adjustments, accepting finished work and amending or rejecting work not meeting standards, instructing employees in specific task and job techniques, giving on-the-job training, checking working conditions and ensuring the work is completed safely. Crew leaders will also monitor performance and disciplinary problems, resolve simple informal complaints of enrollees, report on enrollee performance and prepare reports about work completed. Crew Leader will also demostrate work ethics and work place behavior through a lead by example method.

The crew leaders will develop an environmental educational program for their YCC crew.

35% - Individually or as a leader of volunteers; assists with contract inspections of Invasive and Noxious Chemical and Manual weed contracts. Conducts established botany-related projects. Completes botany projects such chemical and manual Noxious Weed control, cutting and planting shrubs and trees, sowing native grass and pollinator seed, collecting native seed and cuttings, pools, pond and marsh creation and restorations.

30% - Individually conducts inventories of Noxious and Invasive weed, gathers and compiles data by mapping weed populations in ARCGIS; Assembles information for development of management plans, environmental analysis reports and contracts. Collects and analyzes data using methods that are well established. Performs monitoring for effectiveness of treatments. Data management - Keeps comprehensive and accurate records and presents findings to supervisor for review and analysis.Prepares charts and tables to display the data, and presents results to the supervisor in the form of a report for further review and analysis.

Job Requirements: Be over 18 years of age. Possess a valid state driver’s license and ability to obtain a U.S. government driver’s license. Work will include driving a six passenger vehicle to work sites which are generally accessible on gravel Forest Service roads. Exhibit an existing excellent driving and work safety record. A driving record background check will be conducted before the job is offered. Experience in mentoring, coaching, teaching, leading and working with youth. Experience in identifying plants and weeds, ARCGIS skills, and contract inspection experience.

Work is performed in a forest environment where terrain is often uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation, and where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature. The work requires physical exertion, such as hand tool use, walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, recurring bending, and stooping, reaching, etc. Proficiency in the use and maintenance of chainsaws, weed eaters, axes, firefighting equipment etc. are desirable.

THE DUTY STATION:

The position will be stationed in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. Applicants must apply to this location or Blue River, Oregon if they wish to be considered.

Housing may be available (but not guaranteed) in bunkhouses at the McKenzie River Ranger District. The daily rate is approximately $5.00/day. You must provide your own food, towels and bedding. No pets are allowed. Visitors are welcome, but should plan overnight stays offsite (nearby campgrounds or motels).

Public transit is available from the Eugene/Springfield to the ranger district, 1-2 times per day.

McKenzie River RD is about 52 miles east of Eugene. There is city bus service along Hwy 126 ending at the McKenzie River RD, but a car would be useful. 30% - Temperature sensor deployment and retrieval – navigation skills, use of GPS to navigate, reading terrain features, maps and compass; traversing steep, uneven terrain in rocky stream channels. Calibration of equipment and data download will be conducted using standardized protocols. Individually conducts the placement and retrieval of temperature sensors within an established monitoring network.

35% - Data management - Keeps comprehensive and accurate records. Some interpretation of data is required, and the technician must be able to understand and relate the significance of the results to overall study objectives. Prepares charts and tables to display the data, and presents results to the supervisor in the form of a report for further review and analysis. Skills needed would be the use of Excel and ArcGIS to input spatial and tabular data.

Job Requirements: Be over 18 years of age. Possess a valid state driver’s license and ability to obtain a U.S. government driver’s license. Work will include driving a six passenger vehicle to work sites which are generally accessible on gravel Forest Service roads. Exhibit an existing excellent driving and work safety record. Constructs or completes habitat projects such chemical and manual Noxious Weed control, cutting and planting shrubs and trees, sowing native grass and pollinator seed, creating nest structures, meadow maintenance, creating openings, pools, pond and marsh creation and restorations.

Less than 10% - Individually conducts inventories of habitat conditions, gathers and compiles data through a variety of methods for Hydrology, Botany and Wildlife; Assembles information for development of management plans and coordination of restoration needs for environmental analysis reports. Collects and analyzes data using methods that are well established. This may include pre-treatment surveys for stream mapping; Noxious Weed inventory; snags and down wood creation, species and habitat surveys for Western Pond Turtles, Western Bumble Bee, Sierra Nevada Red Fox, American Beavers, amphibians, elk, and deer. Conducts monitoring for effectiveness of habitat related projects. This position may assist with writing and preparing National Environmental Protection Act documents and grant applications.

Less than 10% - Data management - Keeps comprehensive and accurate records and presents findings to supervisor for review and analysis. Some interpretation of data is required, and the technician must be able to understand and relate the significance of the results to overall study objectives. Prepares charts and tables to display the data, and presents results to the supervisor in the form of a report for further review and analysis. Manages data collected. Inputs data into a variety of databases: Watershed Improvement Tracking (WIT) Database; Natural Interpretation and Conservation Education (NICE) database; Volunteer, Youth and Partnership database; Forest Service Activity Tracking System (FACTS) among other databases.
