Your Conference Board of Ordained Ministry has set forth guidelines for Excellence in Ministry. One of these guidelines is to be proactive in the pursuit of Continuing Education opportunities. We are very excited to offer this opportunity for you to earn a portion of this requirement. This CEeventencourages pastors and certified lay professionals to develop their skills in an important area of their ministry. All of us have participated in the self-identification of our churches, and should be aware of the metrics that are being used to determine the effectiveness of the work of the church. One of the most important tasks of the church is to reach people who have never professed faith in Christ. Our Bishop and other church leaders have emphasized the importance of “Professions of Faith” to the Church. This convocation will share some thoughts and ideas that will assist you in developing your ministry around the mission of the church-“Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”. It is our hope that this event can make us more effective in that mission.

Our Guest Leadership

Jim Jackson

Dr. Jim Jackson has been the Senior Pastor at Chapelwood United Methodist Church since 1994. Prior to arriving in Houston, he served churches in Ashburn, Georgia, Columbus, Georgia, and Lubbock, Texas. During his tenure at Chapelwood, it has grown to be one of the flagship churches in United Methodism.

A graduate of Valdosta State University, Emory University's Chandler School of Theology, and the San Francisco School of Theology, Jim has served the church and the world in many capacities and received numerous honors. His mission, however, has been singular: "to be a God-focused, Spirit-led disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, living in the present tense with wisdom, passion, and grace."

Jim is an inspiring leader, a team builder, a Kingdom visionary, a gifted Bible Teacher, a passionate preacher, and a tireless pastor. Throughout his years as Senior Pastor at Chapelwood, the church has experienced remarkable numerical growth, and its missional outreach in the community and the world has expanded exponentially.

Amy Mercer

Amy is an ordained deacon in full connection. She answered her call to full time ministry, after being an oilfield geologist for 10 years. She served on staff at two mission-minded churches in Louisiana. Before moving to El Paso, TX and WesternHills UMC in July 2009, she was the Director of Operations for the LA United Methodist Disaster Recovery Ministry (2006-2009) dealing with the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike.

“I have two mission fields – one that is sitting in the pews of our churches – unaware of the joys of discipleship and the needs of the world. The other mission field is in the community, the world itself.” She believes that concern and compassion for others is learned and taught by example, and that Christ alone supplies the love and strength to serve. And she believes that it is the church’s responsibility to form and to grow disciples and provide opportunities for them to serve.
