Introduction

P2P Document Sharing Community (PDSC) is a software targeting at local area network(LAN) users. Users can use PDSC to find powerpoint , pdf, word files using keyword search in the community .Some features about PDSC are as follows :

Usercan add neighbors and exchange neighbor lists with each other to make up a community

Full text keyword searching within community

Direct document exchange by direct sending file to others.

This easy-to-read user's guide contains all the information you need to set up your equipment properly, understand how to operate your own PSDC.

Chapter 1 Setting up

1.1System Requirement

Platform / Win32 platform: Windows 95/98, Windows 2000/XP
CPU / 200MHz
Memory / 64 Mb
Disk Space / > 100Mb

1.2Installation

  1. Double click on Setup.exeto launch install shield
  2. See Figure 1.2.a .This is the logo of PDSC. Click Next to continue or cancel to abort set up.
  3. See Figure 1.2.b .This id the policy statement . Click Nextto continue or cancel to abort set up.
  4. See Figure 1.2.c .Enter your name and company name. Click on Next to continue or cancel to abort set up.
  5. See Figure 1.2.d. In this part you can select the folder you want to install PSDC.
  6. Default folder is “C:\Program Files\DSC File Sharing” .Click Browse to change folder(see figure 1.2.e). Click on Next to continue or cancel to abort set up.
  7. See figure 1.2.f . You can enter the program folder name you want to show in Program Folder list. Default name is “DSC File Sharing” .
  8. See figure 1.2.g . This step would list all the setting you have selected. If you

want to make any change to these settings , click Black else click Next to start installation.

  1. After installation is completed. You would see figure 1.2.h . Click “Yes , Launch

the program file ”then click finishto launch PDSC. If you don’t want to launch

PDSC now , just click finish to exit install shield.

Chapter 2 Using PDSC

2.1SettingEnvironment and community

1 First time launch PDSC , a window would pop up . Asking user to select shared

folder. Default folder is the folder PDSC is installed. See figure 2.1.a .

2Click Save . After setting up shared folder, a file named ”DSC_log.log” would be generated in the folder PDSC is installed. And a folder “DSC_upload” would be generated in the shared folder previously selected. This folder is used to store files downloaded from other computers.

3After Step2 a window would pop up . This window asks you to enter your first neighbor(or host ). Enter the IP Address or Domain Name of the computer you want to connected.See figure 2.1.b

2.2 Viewing Your Community

1Figure 2.2.a is PDSC’s interface .

2First right clicked onComputer List. See figure 2.2.b . Left clicked on Browse

3After Step2 you can left click on Computer List . You can see a list of computers you have added as your neighbor . One of them would be your own computer. See figure 2.2.c

2.3 Viewing and download files

1To view files in other computers . Left click on the computer you want to view

on the list . Then select Browse File List . See Figure 2.3.a

2After Step1 , you can click on computer you have chosed . This would list all the

files the user have put in their shared folders. See figure 2.3.b

3To download files you want. Left click on the file you want .See figure 2.3.c

4Downloaded filed would be stored in folder “DSC_Upload” in the folder PDSC is installed. . Figure 2.3.d shows the log after successful download.

2.4Using Keyword Search

1 Enter the keyword then click on Search . The searching result would be listed

below. See Figure2.4.a

2Left click on the file you want and select Download to download the file.

2.5Using URL to Search and Download

2.5.1Download a file

1Type “dsc://download/IP address(or domain name)/folder name/file name”

for example in Figure 2.5.a , we try to download ImageRetrival.pdf from cmlg1.

We type “dsc://download/cmlg1.csie.ntu.edu.tw/Paper/ImageRetrival.pdf”

2Press Enter . Be sure that you type the filename or path correctly. This would

2.5.2Search a keyword

1Type “dsc://search/the Keyword you use” .

For example , we want to search for “image retrival” so we type

“dsc://search/image retrival” See Figure 2.5.2.a

2Press Enter . A list of the search result would be listed below. Left click and select downloadon the file you want to download. See figure 2.5.2.b

2.6Adding Neighbor

1Cick on Neighboron the toolbar and select Add Host .See Figure 2.6.a

2Enter IP Address and Domain name of you neighbor. Then press enter.

3After Adding this host , all of the neighbors of this computer would also become your neighbor . So are yours. Every time you add a new host , all your neighbors would have this host added to their computer lists.

2.7 Changing your shared folder

  1. Click on Setup on the toolbar and selected Shared Directory. See Figure 2.7.a
  2. After changing your shared folder , you have to restart PSDC before the setting is applied .

Chapter 3 Q&A

Q : What happens if I added a wrong IP address of domain name ?

A : The wrong host name would still be added to your computer list . Only

when you try to get its file list , a GET_FILE_LIST ERROR would occur.

Q: When would GET_FILE_LIST ERROR occur to a correctly added host ?

A: In using PDSC, all the host that you add and try to download files from must also install PDSC . And these hosts must be running at the time you use the Get File List command.
