Memo to Dems

<p
MEMORANDUM

To: Democrat Candidates for House and Senate
Fr: White House Political Office (In the Martha’s Vineyard White House)
Re: This Whining Has Got to Stop

 • We are getting just a little tired of hearing from Democrat candidates across the country about the so-called “problems” that President Obama and our Administration are causing for you and your campaigns.
 • If you were real Democrats, instead of members of what White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs properly called the “Professional Left,” you would understand the enormous opportunity running for office with Barack Obama in the White House presents to your candidacy.
 • As an example, we heard from many of you asking why, while you were home celebrating the July 4th recess with your constituents, Attorney General Eric Holder chose to announce he was suing the State of Arizona over its immigration law.
 • Many of you said you hadn’t planned on talking about immigration while munching on hot dogs and pretending to laugh when little children dripped their ice cream cones on your new cowboy boots and having to explain why

(a) the Obama Administration was suing Arizona,

(b) why the Administration had chosen to do it when you were actual among your constituents, and

(c) why the President thought this would be a helpful issue to be discussing at all.

 • Well, it just so happens that according to a CNN poll, fully 40 percent of respondents are opposed to the Arizona law. The political office analyzed the CNN data and we have concluded that the 55 percent who say the support the Arizona law probably weren’t going to vote for a Democrat anyway.
 • Next, many of you wasted some prime scell-phone minutes by calling the White House about Michelle Obama’s trip to a five-star hotel in Spain when unemployment is at 9.5 percent, the economic data is heading in the wrong direction at an increasing rate, and while the U.S. Gulf Coast resorts are sitting idle because of fears of being, literally, tarred and feathered as a result of the BP oil spill.
 • While we disagreed with your characterization of Mrs. Obama’s trip, we took your concerns to heart and sent the President to Florida for 27 hours, including a dip in water which is very, very close to the Gulf of Mexico to prove it is perfectly safe.
 • Further, we were very displeased with the New York Daily News’ headline:

<p
Material girl Michelle Obama is a modern-day Marie Antoinette on a glitzy Spanish vacation

 • And don’t think for one second we didn’t dial up the Daily News and let them know just how we felt about it.
 • Then, just this past week, you were in a full, ears-back panic over the President’s reported support for that Mosque which is proposed near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.
 • First of all, the President never endorsed building the Mosque there when he spoke at that Iftar dinner, and putting that aside, the next day he clearly backed away from what he had never said in the first place.
 • We understand that it has also re-ignited a discussion about the President’s religious beliefs, especially that poll by what ABC News identified as “nonpartisan Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life” which found that:

“Nearly one-in-five Americans (18%) now say Obama is a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009. Only about one-third of adults (34%) say Obama is a Christian, down sharply from 48% in 2009. Fully 43% say they do not know what Obama's religion is.”

 • Whether this poll makes any sense or not, we disagree with your claims that yet another weekend of the August recess will now be spent talking about something which cannot possibly be helpful to your campaign. Again, sounds like whining to us here in Martha’s Vineyard.
 • Finally the figures released yesterday showing that an astonishing 500,000 people had filed for first time unemployment insurance will, we believe, proved to be incorrect. We have ordered a full investigation into who at the Department of Labor was responsible.
 • Do not fall into the Republican trap of publically worrying about the unemployment figures.
 • President Obama has saved or created 10s of jobs over the past two years. Many of them right here in the White House Political Office.
