THE STUDENTS’ CODE OF CONDUCT.

Our Lady of Mercy Girls Sec.school is a friendly, orderly and secure school with a dynamic learning environment offering a refreshing balance between curricular and Co-curricular activities. It is a Centre of Excellence in Kamukunji District.

Our Lady of Mercy places a high priority on positive achievement and a strong premium on teamwork, with our partners, parents and guardians.

OUR LADY OF MERCY CODE OF CONDUCT

This code of conduct aims at promoting self-discipline among our pupils and at deterring any form of undesirable behaviour. It aims at ensuring that our students are provided with an orderly and friendly environment that enables them to achieve what they came to do here at Our Lady of Mercy- that is –to learn.

The code of conduct also provides all the students with the opportunity to develop positive self-control and self-discipline by requiring them to adhere to the set rules and regulations.

Our Lady of Mercy is a community of teachers, administrative staff, parents and pupils. We are able to meet our main goal of imparting knowledge and skills through mutual respect between all members of our community.

We aim to provide an environment that ensures that our students grow and make good progress academically, physically, socially and morally. This is I line with our Motto, Mission and Vision.

Mission: To provide Quality, excellent and Holistic Education that will make a girl child discover her potential for self-reliance.

Vision: To become a leading girl’s secondary school by providing holistic education.

We have a duty therefore to promote good behaviour and discipline in our school. Our approach to discipline is what we refer to as “A positive approach “Our focus is on reinforcing and rewarding food behaviour. This is through a reward system that includes:-

However, failure to abide by the principles of the code of conduct or to obey school rules may result in punishments and sanctions. This may include:-

6.  Permanent exclusion from school

Our Lady of Mercy, we want our pupils to be of strong character, they should be hardworking, patient, generous, tolerant, respective, well-groomed and have good etiquette and deportment.

Our expectations of our students are embodied in Our Lady of Mercy Code of Conduct. Please go through the code of conduct with your parent or guardian. Carefully read and understand the laid down rules and regulations and sign at the indicated place.

1.  COURTESY

You must speak politely to everyone at all times, expressing yourself clearly and calmly. You should move quietly and sensibly about the school. Do not barge into rooms or run about rather walk with a a fast pace. Always keep to the left when moving along the corridors. Form the habit of giving way to others. You should move quickly and quietly form one lesson to another. You should always act in a socially acceptable and responsible manner whether in or out of school. Noise is to be kept to a minimal level throughout the school premises. You must show respect to other people’s property and never take what does not belong to you. You should always try to understand and respect other people’s point of view. Be tolerant of others who may be different from you.

2.  USE OF LANGUAGE

The use of vernacular, slang or sheng language is not allowed. Students must communicate using the school’s official language that is English. Kiswahili may be used in the respective language lessons and on Fridays, the whole day. Foul language or any/rude gestures is strictly forbidden.

3.  THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

You should keep the school clean and tidy so that it is a welcoming place. Put all litter in the bins provided. Keep the walls clean and unmarked. Keep the furniture clean, unmarked. Take care of the notice boards and any work displayed on them. Do not eat/drink in the classrooms. Keep off the grass.

4.  SCHOOL UNIFORM

“full and proper uniform(or games kit as directed b the sports staff) must be worn at times when within the school premises and this must be in the correct manner.”

Pupils are expected to fully adhere to the prescribed school uniform and sports kit.

·  You must always wear the prescribed school uniform at all times

·  Students must be properly kitted during all P.E lessons

·  Incorrect uniform will lead to a student being sent home

·  Items of clothing worn by pupils that do not conform to the prescribed uniform/games kit will be confiscated by any member of staff.

·  /In addition the member of staff concerned is at liberty to impose detention on the pupil, or in the event of continued transgression, to forward the pupil to the Deputy Head Teacher.

·  If a student is not in position to adhere to this rule, then a note giving satisfactory explanation as to the reasons why the pupil is not in the prescribed uniform must be written by parents/guardians or a medical practitioner. It must be shown to the class teacher and must be shown upon request to member of the staff who may need an explanation.

Only plain, white or black, short sleeved T.Shirts may be worn under the normal school shirt on cold days I addition to normal underclothing. Such t-shirts should not stick out of the normal school shirt.

On cold days, the student may wear the following additional items which include the schools fleece jacket, or grey scarves and grey leggings. No other items will be allowed e.g. gloves etc.

All items of school clothing must be labeled with the pupils name for ease of recovery in the event they are misplaced. Students must always wear the prescribed school uniform I the correct manner therefore:-

-  Sagging of skirts is not allowed

-  School ties must be worn at full mast at all times by all pupils except when instructions are given to the contrary.

-  The top button of the shirt must always be done

-  Blouses must always be tucked in

-  All must wear formal leather shoes –black

5.  PERSONAL APPEARANCE

It is the schools expectation that students should strive to maintain high standards of personal grooming. Any appearance of poor grooming- will not be tolerated.

All girls should have

-  Short, well-manicured nails

-  Clean, well-kept hair must be maintained at all times.

The following will not be allowed

-  Dreadlocks

-  Distrustful hairstyles

-  Hair-no curly kit nor blowout

6.  OUT OF BOUND AREAS

Students should not go to areas that are designated as out of bounds without the prior permission of supervision of a member of staff. Below are some of the areas that are out of bounds for students:-

-  Primary school and pre-unit

-  The kitchen

-  The car park and bus park areas

-  The staffroom is out of bound to all students unless in the company of a teacher

-  The outlying construction sites(when construction is on)

-  The fields are out of bound during the school hours

-  The matron and teachers house

-  No student will be allowed in the laboratory unless in the company of a teacher or the laboratory assistant.

7.  ELECTRONIC DEVICES

The devices listed below are strictly forbidden. Students are not allowed in school with the following:-

·  Flash disks

·  Mobile phones

·  MP3/4players

·  CD players

·  Discmans

·  IPod

·  Games-on CDs,DVDs or even Card Games

·  All other non-educational materials

If students bring one of the devices listed above, they will be confiscated and crushed during assembly-by the owner.

8.  MEMBERS OF STAFF

Students are expected to treat all members of staff with utmost courtesy and respect at all times, within or outside the school premises. The students will address the male members of staff as “SIR and the female members of staff as MADAM.

9.  CONTRABAND GOODS

These are items that may cause harm or discomfort to other students and members of the community. They include:-

a)  Knives

b)  Glass bottles

c)  Fireworks

d)  Or any other dangerous items

The students should not bring any of the above to school

10.  HOME WORK

Homework must be done and handed in on time to respective teachers

11.  THEFT, DESTRUCTIVE OR DEFACING

Theft, destructive or defacing of any school property will lead to serious consequences or replacement of the same.

12.  PUPILS LEAVING SCHOOL

A student can only do so if prior permission has been sought and the official gate pass has been issued.

13.  DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

The possession or use of drugs and alcohol is not expected of any student. Any substance or alcohol abuse could result in suspension or permanent exclusion (expulsion) form the school. Some of the predicts that are categorized as contraband include:-

-  Cigarettes

-  Any hard drug

-  Alcohol e.t.c

14.  BULLYING, NAME CALLING OR ANY FORM OF DISCRIMINATION

This is not expected of Our Lady of Mercy students and would lead to serious consequences to those found in breach.

Bulling- bullying is any repetitive act of aggression that causes embarrassment, pain or discomfort to another person. It can take a number of forms:

Ø  Physical(hitting, pushing, tripping, spitting on, shoving, throwing things)

Ø  Interfering with another’s property(including stealing , hiding, and vandalism damaging or destroying it)

Ø  Hurtful use of cyberspace (texting, emailing or using social networks (e.g. face book, tweeter, google plus etc.)
