Black critics rise/unite in support of the musical, based on the lyrics of Tupac Shakur

Community urged to #occupyBroadwayto show solidarity
with young black males and others in struggling communities across America

NEW YORK (June 30, 2014)—On the heels of the recent world premiere of Holler If Ya Hear Me, the Kenny Leon-directed musical that brings the lyrics of Tupac Shakur to life, leading black and hip-hop media outlets have given the production rave reviews and urged people to see it now.Holler If Ya Hear Me stars renowned slam poet, actor, singer and musician Saul Williams as an ex-con who returns to his block to change his life and winds up changing his community. The public is urged to #occupyBroadway in support of perpetually voiceless black males and other inner city residents being given a powerful voice on Broadway.

Holler If Ya Hear Me is a non-autobiographical show that uses the hip-hop legend’s music to imagine a current-day Midwestern American industrial city full of strife, joblessness and hopelessness. The action

takes place on “My Block,” named after the 2002 2Pac song. Social commentator Shakur took on serious issues plaguing the inner city; and Holler, written by Todd Kreidler, doesn’t back down, depicting the harsh realities of youth caught in a never-ending cycle of despair but also a hopeful note of faith, reconciliation and dreams on the verge of being realized. Throughout his lyrics Shakur issues a clarion call for change on some of the worst societal conditions plaguing inner cities—a call that is, thanks to this production, now heard loud and clear on Broadway.

Holler If Ya Hear Me, like Tupac’s music,has the mission of giving a voice to the young black male and the many others trapped in inner cities by a deck that is stacked against them, blocked from reaching for their dreams. Now is the time to #occupyBroadway to send a clear message: that these issues matter and that we support this production which is inspiring the type of dialogue needed to resolve these issues in earnest.

To further put hip-hop in the spotlight, producers have partnered with The National Museum of Hip-Hop (NMoH) to present a full-scale hip-hop exhibition at the Palace Theater (1564 Broadway at 47th Street), home of the show. The exhibition represents all areas of hip-hop, from DJing and emceeing to B-boying and graffiti art. Through the display, the NMoH, the first and only state-chartered museum for hip-hop, teaches the history of the art form, presenting one-of-a-kind artifacts and memorabilia as well as a mural. Ticketholders for the show may view the exhibition at no additional cost 30 minutes prior to each performance.

Holler If Ya Hear Me also stars Tony winner Tonya Pinkins, Christopher Jackson, SayconSengbloh, Ben Thompson, John Earl Jelks, Joshua Boone and Dyllon Burnside.

Tickets start at $39—$30 for students—and go to $139 to accommodate young people as well as the most dedicated theatergoer.
