img src= Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start producing watches until 1894. Its first chosen name was the “Columbian Watch Co.” but this had already been copyrighted by the Waterbury Company. The name Hamilton was then chosen - a tribute to Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the town’s growth.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant (convertible) watch and, following the USA’s entry into WWI, a small line of military style wire lug trench watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
One such example of Hamilton’s high quality and great design is found in the “CUSHION STRAP” wristwatch – a men’s model introduced by the company in 1923 (without a sub-seconds dial) and one of Hamilton’s early classics. What makes this example extra nice is its case - 14kt Solid White Gold and in excellent condition.
This triple-signed timepiece dates to ca 1928 and measures 35mm end to end by 28mm in width (31mm with winding crown) or 1-3/8” by 1-1/8” not including the crown. This is a smaller men’s size albeit quite normal for its day – ideal for the gentleman who prefers a smaller watch or a woman who likes a watch with more presence on her wrist. It has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David and its original 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly, keeping accurate time.
The ivory color, matte enamel finish dial is in excellent condition – restored to its correct original status in the recent past. It features a 60 minute outer track border, stylized enamel painted numerals, original blued steel Hamilton hands and a cushion-shaped seconds dial with 60 second outer track and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12.
The new old stock (vintage 1930s) solid glass crystal is in mint condition, made especially for the Hamilton Cushion model. The three-piece 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is in excellent PLUS shape – truly superb with no wear. The domed white gold finished winding crown appears to be original and is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition, free of any wear and monogrammed “N.F.” Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel, manual wind movement, signed Hamilton Watch Co. – 17 Jewels – 987 with serial number #4,009,549, dating it to ca 1928 as per production records. This is a topnotch American movement folks, and it features gold jewel settings and Geneva striping along the top plates. The inside of the case lid is signed “H” for Hamilton and below this stamped 6/0 – Wadsworth Quality – 14 Karat Solid Gold – 0123023.
This fine Hammy has been cleaned, oiled & regulated prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching buckle for a fine look. All in all an extra nice example of a “Cushion Plain” strap watch in 14k gold – thanks for dropping by!<p<ul
Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. <p
As my pal Cautious Carl says, "Buy a Nice Watch from Mike"….but to be honest, I’m not even sure he knows my name!
<img src=

<img src= always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
The following is one very nice 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold men’s Tank form watch, dating to 1947 and complete with Peaked & Facetedlugs. This is the Tuxedo model (also called the “Craftsman” in some advertisements), introduced after WWII as part of Bulova’s Excellency group of watches, all with 21 Jewels and made in the USA.
Triple-signed for Bulova, it measures 39mm end to end and 21mm in width (22.5mm with crown). In inches, this works out to be just over 1-1/2” long by 7/8” wide. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 21 jewel mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
Theblack, enamel finished dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its original status. This dial applied 18k solid gold Arab numerals and square faceted hour markers, original gold metal Baton-style hands and a separate sub-seconds dial with sweep original seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The curve sided, rectangular form case is 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS condition. Take a look at the lugs on this model, faceted and rising to a peak, what the Tuxedo model is known for. The crown is a matching gold finish and in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is solid yellow gold and in excellent order, no wear and no engravings. It is stamped 14K GOLD - BULOVA with case reference number along the opposite edge. Peeking inside I find a fully serviced and high-grade Twenty One Jewel movement signed Bulova Watch Co., [Caliber] 7AK, 21 Jewels, USA - 47. This number (47) indicates it was made in 1947 and predates Bulova’s use of letter/number date codes. The inside case back is stamped BULOVA – 14K GOLD – NEW YORK.
This fully serviced timepiece winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 16mm deBeer hand crafted lizard grain strap with matching color buckle, a high quality band for a high quality watch. My photos don't quite do this one justice folks, it is truly a beautiful model in pristine shape.p<ul
Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. <img src= In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression and (more urgent matters) prevented this.
Here is an excellent condition example of a 14kt Solid White Gold lady's Gruen timepiece adorned with genuine diamonds that simply shimmer in the light. Dating to circa 1927, it is the Cartouche Model 155, featuring a high quality Gruen Guild 15 jewel mechanism.
Triple-signed, it measures 25mm end to end and 15mm in width (16.5mm with decorative winding crown). This works out to be 1 inch in length by 5/8 of an inch wide and it is fitted on a black cord bracelet strap that makes the overall size 7-1/8 inches. I can make this shorter or longer as well. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 15 jewel, caliber 155 mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly, keeping accurate time.
The ivory and silver enamel finished dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its exact original status and just beautiful. It features raised gold Arabic style numbers, a 60 minute inner track border and original blue steel Spade-style hands. Note the finely carved Florentine center dial – highly detailed! Signed GRUEN below the 12 and embossed “Switzerland” at the base, under the case bezel.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition- removed in photos only to avoid glare. The 14 Karat Solid White Gold case is Tonneau-form with “pinched” corners in excellent PLUS condition – truly flawless. The highlight of the case has to be its 4genuine substantial diamonds, two above the dial and two below. These are absolutely genuine and of a high clarity. The fancy engraved winding crown is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is complete with an intricate Florentine border, unmarked and in pristine shape - truly without flaw. Peeking inside I find a clean and higher-grade Fifteen Jewel Gruen movement that is signed GRUEN GUILD – FIFTEEN 15 JEWELS, FOUR 4 ADJ. – SWISS with the caliber number “155” stamped below the balance wheel. The inside of the case lid is stamped GRUEN 14K CINCINNATI – 155/61 with case reference number below. Please note how the mechanism’s caliber number (155) is repeated on the case lid while the 61 is the dial design reference number.
This cleaned, oiled & regulated beauty winds and sets very smoothly while keeping very good time. It is fitted on an Art Deco style black cord strap that is of a good size to fit your wrist (a bit over 7 inches) and I can adjust it smaller or longer – just tell me your wrist size in inches before I mail i! All in all a beautiful timepiece that epitomizes the Art Deco era while representing a solid investment to its new owner – can’t beat that!p<ul
Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
