English 098 – Reading Improvement

English 099 – Fundamentals of Writing

Week 1. Getting Started.

Class 1 Become familiar with the lessons by doing the Tour.

Homework: Survey the Personal Academic Notebook

Class 2 Learn the modules of the program: what they offer and how to navigate them.

Homework: Read the Theme Introduction in the Personal Academic Notebook, and respond to readings.

Class 3 Work the Explore module for Assignment One. Be sure to call up Maya so you can see what she has to offer.

Homework: Freewrite answers to the Questions to Explore in your Personal Academic Notebook.

Week 2. Getting Going

Class 4 Reread the Writing Assignment. Ask me if you are not sure what to do. Work Focus module for Assignment One. I will collect one of your freewritings.

Homework: Read and do activities for Reading Selections One and Two in your Personal Academic Notebook.

Class 5 Use all class time to write your first draft.

Homework: Finish draft if you were unable to do so in class. Read and do activities for Reading Selection Three in your Personal Academic Notebook.

Class 6 Reread both the Writing Assignment and your first draft to make sure they match. Work the Revise module. Call up every Student Sample so you can see what you can do when you revise. Send your draft out for Peer Response.

Homework: Finish revising if you were unable to do so in class.

Week 3. You’re On Your Way

Class 7 Send your draft our for peer response if you have not already done so. Fill our Peer Response Forms that have been sent to you, and return tem to the sender.

Class 8 Revise using the Peer Response you received, and begin to edit your essay. Use the Edit Guide; explore what it offers. After I read this first essay, I will let you know what specific items (for example, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, sentence structure) you need to practice.

Class 9 Finish your editing, go to the Conclude module, and hand in your essay.

Week 4 Review and Preview

Class 10 Class discussion in which we review this first assignment on Interactive English. What was essay? What was difficult? Where do you need more support, either with the program or with the writing task? We will also preview the next assignment.

During Class 11, I will distribute a suggested syllabus for the next 10 class sessions based on our review.
