FOOD TECHNOLOGY - Year 9

Overview of Subject

Food Technology is a course that helps to developstudent’s abilitiesto design and make products with creativity which are innovative and take into account the ingredients and their functions.

What will I learn?

  • Students will learn to use a range of ingredients, equipment and processes to develop design proposals taking into consideration environmental and sustainable issues.
  • Students will develop their knowledge of ingredients by carrying out practical and investigatory work whilst taking into consideration food safety and hygiene.
  • Students will work to given briefs completing a range of different units in order to complete the course effectively.

Aside from the making element where students will consider the presentation of products produced, students will also be asked to complete a portfolio of work that documents their learning of the subject and an examination.

Overview of Pathways available in Subject

The first year of this subject (Year 9) teaches students practical making skills, ingredient knowledge, processes and how to work in a food preparation area in a healthy and safe way.

Students will then specialise in eitherGCSE Food Technologyor Hospitality depending on their interests and abilities to start in Year 10.

Pathways and Examinations and Assessment

Each course will be assessed through the completion of a portfolio of work which is made up of different units. The course specifications and the examination are accredited by the examination boards as detailed below.

Future Pathways

GCSE Food Technologyprepares students to continue into careers that require logical thinking, problem solving and team working skills. Students that study GCSE Food Technology can continue on to study A-Level and Degree courses in either technical or artistic areas. Careers such as food scientists, quality assurance, food manufacturing, Nutritionists and other careers in the public health sector.

Level 2 Btec Hospitality prepares students to continue onto Level 3 Hospitality and then to study at degree level to follow careers such as Chefs,Hotel Managers, employment within restaurants and other hospitality settings. This course also prepares students to continue into Apprenticeships if this is the route that they prefer to take.
