Role: / Engage Befriending Manager
Hours: / 20 hours per week (potential to increase subject to funding)
Salary: / £24,381 -£28,006 FTE (depending on experience)
Main Purpose: / To manage Engage Befriending’s service provision, staff and volunteers in accordance with its aims and objectives, and within The Mustard Tree’s vision.
Key Tasks: /
  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the project
  • Build partnerships and increase awareness of the service
  • Secure funding and ensure long term sustainability
  • Manage & support the Engage Befriending team
  • Develop strategies and best practise, to increase the wellbeing of isolated and lonely older people
  • Represent the Charity and its ethos

Reports to: / The CEO of The Mustard Tree
Strategy and Planning
  • Develop Engage Befriending’s vision and strategy in order to meet the needs of the isolated and lonely within the Reading Borough
  • Prepare budgets and regularly review the financial health of the project to ensure sustainability
  • Source funding, including identifying grants and writing proposals, and developing individual and organisational giving
Management:
  • Manage and support the Engage befriending team including sourcing and delivering training opportunities to develop staff and volunteers’ skills
  • Complete necessary safeguarding training in order to train Engage Befriending staff and volunteers and respond effectively to any safeguarding incidents
  • Attend Senior Managersand Trustee meetings. Work with the wider Mustard Tree team to bring about the vision and mission of The Mustard Tree as a whole
  • Attending and guiding staff prayers and leading bible devotionals
Partnership working:
  • Work with other local service providers to reduce isolation and loneliness. Enabling a town wide joined up approach and generate referral and signposting routes
  • Raise awareness of isolation and loneliness within the community and recruit suitable befriending volunteers.
  • Work with our partner churches & other faith and community groups to identify suitable volunteers and opportunities for client engagement.
  • Raise the profile of the service by doing presentations and attending events for various organisations including speaking at church services.(This will include some evening and Sunday working.)
Publicity & PR
  • Produce and distribute publicity materials (including leaflets, newsletters, and articles for local publications)
  • Develop the use of social media and update the website
  • Produce monitoring reports for funding bodies and the Trustees as required

Decision-making, organising, planning and problem solving:Understand the needs of our service users; assess situations to determine importance, urgency and risk; making clear decisions.Set priorities and develop tasks for all Project personnel; monitor progress towards goals; determine strategies; evaluate processes outcomes; assess problem situations, identifying causes and generating solutions.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential: experience of managing/supervising a team, experience of financial management, good communication and presentation skills, PC literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), understanding of the effects of isolation and loneliness and the issues affecting older people.
Desirable: knowledge/experience of reviewing project activity & producing monitoring reports, experience of fundraising, experience of working in either the voluntary, health or social care sector with vulnerable adults.
OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Under the Equality Act 2010, this post has an occupational requirement to be a Christian.

  • To have a DBS Enhanced Disclosure through The Mustard Tree, or a portable DBS.
  • Citizenship of the UK or the EU, or have entitlement to work in the UK.
  • To be able to access the Mustard Tree / Engage Befriending offices (unfortunately there is not currently any disabled access. The office is up one flight of stairs).
