PurposeThis unit standard is for people working in cemeteries who are required to supervise others as part of their role. People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe roles, requirements and procedures in relation to burial works; and oversee the conduct of burial works.

This unit standard is based on the unit of competency WFSBCR405A, Oversee burial works.

2Workplace policies and procedures may include but are not limited to – standard operating policies and procedures, standards and certification requirements, quality assurance procedures, health and safety procedures, emergency, fire and accident procedures.

3Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but are not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Burial and Cremation Act 1964, and bylaws.

4Burial works refers to grave probing, grave digging, grave re-opening, exhumation, vault excavation and installation.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Describe roles, requirements and procedures in relation to burial works.

Performance criteria

1.1Description includes the roles and duties of cemetery authorities.

Rangecemetery authorities may include but are not limited to – local authorities, cemetery trust, drivers, cemetery manager, grave diggers, groundspeople, gardeners, leading hands, foremen, supervisors.

1.2Description includes different social, cultural, and religious burial requirements.

Rangerequirements may include but are not limited to – burial procedures, time between death and burial, time between burial and closure of graves, cultural rituals to assist grieving, spiritual or religious symbolism, placing special personal effects with the deceased person, use of music, placement of candles, choice and placement of flowers, photographs.

1.3Description includes health and safety requirements, and infection control practices, and is consistent with applicable legislation.

1.4Description of procedures includes procedures for written burial requests or instruction, and for record keeping requirements and procedures, and is consistent with workplace policies and procedures.

Element 2

Oversee the conduct of burial works.

Performance criteria

2.1Burial work schedules are monitored and staff are assisted in resolving scheduling difficulties or unexpected problems.

2.2Grave digging and vault/crypt excavations and installations are monitored to ensure they are completed safely in accordance with workplace policies and procedures.

2.3Grave probes and grave re-openings are monitored to ensure they are completed safely in accordance with workplace policies and procedures.

2.4Problems arising during or after burial works are identified and appropriate person is notified.

Rangeappropriate person may include but is not limited to – supervisor, foreman, leading hand.

2.5Potential and actual breaches of health and safety procedures, or applicable legislative requirements for burial works, are identified and action taken is in accordance with workplace policies and procedures.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
