Learning Activities:

  • “Exploration of self” activities – These activities will take place on Mondays. They will be used to help students tackle issues dealing with different forms of prejudice. They will focus mainly on students being able to identify how different forms of prejudice correspond to their own lives. These activities are much more introspective and have students think about their points of view and how they interact with these forms of prejudice.
  • Current Events and Journals – Specifically for this unit, students will be asked to collect articles about how prejudice and discrimination pops up in the media and in the world today. These articles and images will be used in order to journal what they are seeing in the article/image they have brought in. With weekly discussions they will be asked to go back and address the following question in their journal: “How is this form of discrimination being addressed?” This information will then be utilized for their final quarter assessment. Articles should correspond to that week’s topic.

Assessment:

TAKING ACTION AGAINST PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION TOGETHER -

Students from all advisories will be partnered with a different grade. They will conduct surveys where other students will answer questions about how they have been discriminated against in (1) society and (2) at school. Based on the data gathered from the different grades students will form action plans of how we at the school community can try and combat these forms of discrimination together.
