AIM

Our wish is to promote music and art making it accessible to all.

This is the story of Katrien, Lucy and Kathy who set up this ambitious and exciting project; three women for whom preserving their inner child intact is essential. As Pablo Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”.

In the Westthe mind is always busy we rarely act from our “guts”. This would nevertheless help us each day of our life.

Why?

Instinct and intuition lead us to creativity.

Creativity helps to solve our problems.

Creativity leads to art and is a way of expressing how we feel. It can be developed alone or in a group of people. Art brings us closer and has the power to heal. Art enables us to forget the daily routine and gets us back to our roots.

Art awakens the inner child.

To see the world through a child’s eyes is a privilege that we all tend to forget far too often.

HISTORY

It all started with Katrien who was born with a serious heart malformation and for the last ten years she has also been suffering from a rheumatic illness, Ankylosingspondylitis, also known as Bechterew’s disease.

After her second open heart surgery in 2003, her physical condition deteriorated. Despite having started art classes in Alost, she was forced to put down her music instruments temporarily.

Nine difficult years of motor rehabilitation followed.

Nevertheless her love for music was so strong she resumed her drum classes.

Thanks to her drum teacher at Cadence Mandingue who taught her techniques to use efficiently her energy, katrien was able to pick up her instrument, gain strength, coordination and a better posture.

During one of her many sessions on simulator to learn once again daily movements something clicked:

“I’m 34 years old and I spend every Tuesday opening and closing jars”

Music still being part of her life she realised that by using a shékéré (music instrument also called shaker) she could attain the same result.

Her imagination was running wild and witheachrehabilitation movement she imagined doing the same with a music instrument.

She decided to combine music and motor rehabilitation! It would certainly be more motivating and easier to accept psychologically.

Searching for ideas and possible collaborations Katrien started looking into similar initiatives in Belgium. She set up a dossier gathering all her ideas and sought people in the medical sector who wouldbe interested in her project.

Katrien and Lucy met in 2011 in the master’s class of the Cadence Mandingue Academy.

Kathy was also playing djembé at the Cadence Mandingue Academy.

In September 2012 she joined Lucy and Katrien’sdjembé class.

The three women clicked and joined forces on many occasions to play at various events.

Lucy was also lending her support to an African dance class and had started sculpture. Kathy was working as a graphic designer.

The idea to put all their knowledge and competence in common to create this project slowly emerged.

Art, music, creativity, rehabilitation...

They were bursting with ideas and had to find a way to make their dream a reality.

Many evenings were spent setting up this project with the help of friends, colleagues, schools, physiotherapists,... and Katrien’s music theory and drum teacher.

The idea became reality.

We want to share our love and passion for art, music and creativity.

We want to preserve every inner child. As Pablo Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”.

ArtMuze is born.
