From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Today we conclude the liturgical year with the celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. As I was growing up as a boy in Sandusky, it was always this particular feast in my home parish that Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, what many of us may remember as “Forty Hours”, was observed. In hindsight, it seemed like a most appropriate conclusion to a year of seasons and feasts. I recall the use of lots of incense and a lengthy procession with third grade boys and girls who were dressed in their First Holy Communion suits and dresses from the previous spring season, a half dozen altar servers in cassock and surplice carrying torch like candles only used for such an occasion and at least twenty priests adorned in their cassock and surplices with the three-horned black biretta (hat) with ornate stoles hanging from their shoulders. The procession which traveled along the aisle ways of the church moved ever slowly and solemnly. There, at the end of the procession, was the priest adorned in a gold cope and humeral veil carrying the beautiful and ornate monstrance, while the altar server designated to carry the thurible (censer) turned from time to time during the procession to honor the Most Holy Eucharist with a reverent trifold incensation. Such days are simply memory now, but one that touches the heart with renewed fervor.
However the Church chooses to commemorate this solemn feast, its purpose is to mark our journey of faith on earth. Our pilgrimage and journey as the people of God leads us ever closer to the reign of God. And so, as we conclude a year of celebrations regarding our Lord and his invitation to follow Him, we move our sights to yet another liturgical year with the season of Advent next weekend. This holy time offers us the opportunity to peer inward to our souls and ask the ultimate question: “Is my heart ready to accept the mystery of Jesus’ birth, God’s breaking forth in human life, once again?’ It’s a deep question and one that does not readily provide an immediate answer. That’s why we expend the time to pray more, reflect more, undertake charitable acts and go to confession during Advent. It’s all about preparing our hearts and souls for a warm welcome of Christ. I hope you will join me this Advent in that inward reflection to really see and feel the Lord’s love in ways maybe never considered. Just maybe, we might glean a new perspective on a mystery that has always stood before us but was never explored or reflected upon as deeply as it might be this Advent. Above all, let’s pray for one another this Advent.

ADVENT SCRIPTURE SERIES... Monsignor Singler will be leading a three-part (90 minute) Advent Scripture Series on the Infancy Narratives found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. To accommodate family or work schedules, Monsignor will be offering an evening session at Holy Family this Thursday, November 30 and December 14 and 21 beginning at 7:15 PM in the Parish Hall (lower level of the church). He will offer a morning session at St. Nicholas this Fridays, December 1 and 15 and 22 beginning at 9:00 AM in the Parish Center. Save the dates.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION/YOUTH GROUP
Junior High Christian Formation classes resume this week at the normal time. There are no classes on Dec. 6.
Seniors (HF, 9:30am)and Juniors (SN, 8:30am) meet next Sunday, December 3. Freshmen and sophomores meet Sunday, December 10. There are no classes this weekend.

SN/HF Annual Christmas Youth Group Caroling is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3. Everyone wishing to participate should meet at Holy Family Religious Ed. Center at 3:50pm. After singing at the Meadows of Ottawa, we will eat at McDonalds.
Youth Group members’ help is needed the weeks of Dec. 4-8 and 11-15 from 3:00pm until 6:30pm making buckeyes in the Parish Center. Please let Elena Niese, Madison Schroeder or Regina Schnipke know when you can help.
2018 MARCH FOR LIFE. Interested in attending the 2018 March for Life in Washington D.C. on January 20, 2018? Join the College and Young Adult bus trip sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Toledo! The trip is only $159, but for college students there is a special discounted price of $119! HOLY COMMUNION FOR THE SICK AT ST. RITA’S. Visiting the sick is one of the corporal works of mercy, and bringing Holy Communion to people in the hospital is a great way to practice this. St. Rita’s Medical Center is looking for volunteer Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to share the sacrament with patients, and are especially in need on weekends. PREPARATION HAS BEGUN for the Putnam County Community Thrift Store’s annual “Christmas for the Needy” Program. The Putnam County Community Thrift Store works with other agencies so as to not duplicate service.
