Our field trip to the Baltimore Museum of Industry is TOMORROW Thursday October 9th!

Weekly Graded Work folders were sent home today (Wednesday!). There should have been 3 graded assignments in their folder. Some children may be missing an assignment because they just finished it today or are still in the process of completing it. It will be sent home next week.!
-Science prediction
-Is it realistic fiction? response
-Venn-diagram compare and contrast
Please review the graded work with your child and then return it to the folder. I will be keeping a portfolio for each student here at school. Feel free to make copies of your child's graded work to keep for your own records. Please be sure to sign the Communication Sheet that is stapled to the back of the folder. Thank you!

Students brought home information about the school wide reading program last week. This year, instead of filling out tickets, students will fill out a reading log to receive balls for books they have read.

Some of you expressed interest in receiving information and resources to help support your child in regards to the math curriculum. Here is a link I found that should be helpful. Please explore the entire page and all of the links so you can see the wide variety of resources provided. Don't hesitate to contact me with additional questions:

Class Update

In science, students conducted tests to gather data to help us answer the following question: How does the type of ball affect the speed it travels down the ramp? We will analyze and discuss our results on Friday.
In math, students explored area by using square tiles to 'cover' different shapes.
In reading, we began reading the story Angel Child, Dragon Child. Our purpose for reading was to determine what the central message or lesson of the story is and to analyze the character's actions.
In writing, students were their own "boss" during writing time. They began working on writing entries they will use to determine their next "seed" idea.

Class Update

In the morning, we went to Mrs. Wilson's room to talk about our field trip and to make field trip groups.

In math, we practiced using fact triangles how to solve for unknowns in various locations of addition and subtraction problems. I met with groups to practice solving one and two step word problems.
In reading, we practiced asking and answer questions before, during, and after reading while reading an informational text about how bikes work.
In writing, students finished revising their flash draft. I'm so proud of their hard work on this piece! Tomorrow we'll start a new piece. The students will be more independent because they know all the steps of the process and what's expected of them during writing.

Class Update

In science, we continued our exploration of gravity. We learned how air resistance can affect falling objects. Then, we watched a video of a hammer and a feather being dropped on the moon (where this is no air, so there's no air resistance). Ask your child to find out what happened! Some of the concepts we discussed today involved Galileo and complex physics problems, so your child might have questions!
In math, we reviewed how to solve for unknowns in various locations of addition and subtraction problems. We also reviewed different strategies we could use for subtraction problems involving zeros.
In reading, we identified cause and effect relationships in pictures and an informational text about Forces and Motion.
In writing, students continued to revise their flash draft by using different strategies. Students used various writers as mentors. We also practiced identifying the heart of the story so we can add more descriptive details, talk, and action to that moment. Then, we practiced including the internal/inside story: what did I notice? what did I wonder? what was I thinking?

In math, I assessed the students' understanding of solving subtraction equations with the unknown in various locations. Then, we reviewed addition vocabulary and solving easier problems. After that, the students used the easier problems to help them solve harder problems. For example, students can take the steps they use to solve 3+c=7 to a more difficult problem like 145+c=515.

I was out of the building for the afternoon.

Weekly Graded Work folders were sent home for the second time yesterday (Wednesday!). There should have been 4 graded assignments in their folder.
-Making Inferences
-Personal Point of View
-Composing a Ten and/or Hundred
-Addition Compensation/4 Strategies for Subtraction
Please review the graded work with your child and then return it to the folder. I will be keeping a portfolio for each student here at school. In social studies, we participated in a mock vote so the students could see the importance of being an informed citizen when voting. There were 6 voting rounds. Each round provided the students more information about the four candidates they were choosing from. The students realized that the more information they had about the candidate, the easier it was to make a decision when voting. They also noticed that each candidate had positives and negatives, which made it difficult to choose.

In math, we practiced solving subtraction equations with the unknown in various locations. Parents-I emailed you about this! We began by reviewing subtraction vocabulary and solving easier problems. Then, the students used the easier problems to help them solve harder problems.

In reading, we practiced identifying cause and effect in an informational text about bikes. The section of the text we read talked about forces and gravity, which relates to what we have been talking about in science. Ask your child to learn more about the discussion we had!

In writing, students continued to revise their flash draft by using different strategies. Students used various writers as mentors. We also practiced identifying the heart of the story so we can add more descriptive details, talk, and action to that moment.

Class Update

In social studies, we learned about different committees that members of the county council serve on, what each committee focuses on, and their importance in the county. Then, we learned about who helps to make laws.

In math, we practiced solving two-step word problems and subtracting across zeros. Subtracting across zeros (ex: 400-284) can be tricky because you have to decompose a hundred first, then decompose a ten.

In reading, we practiced identifying the main idea and key details of an informational article about bones. We learned a lot!

In writing, students reread the book Come on, Rain! by Karen Hesse. While reading, the students highlighted areas of her writing that they think show what we've been learning in writing (ex: telling the story bit by bit, using descriptive details, etc). Then, they had time to try to do some of the things Hesse did in her writing in their own writing.

Class Update

In the morning, we attended an anti-bullying assembly. Our class enjoyed it a lot!

Later, we had a make-up guidance lesson with Mrs. Polizzi to talk about the debug strategy.

In math (which was short due to the make-up guidance lesson), we solved a two step word problem by writing equations to represent the unknown.
In the afternoon, the entire 3rd grade headed to Mrs. Wilson's room to engage in a multidisciplinary activity involving science, social studies, and reading. The students used evidence from the past to help them make inferences about what life was like in Pompeii. Ask your child to learn more!

In science, we gathered data by conducting tests to answer the following testable question: How does gravity affect the motion of different objects? Students used feathers, dictionaries, ping pong balls, styrofoam balls, wiffle balls, and unifix cubes. We talked about the importance of keeping different variables the same (ex: the height from at which the objects are being dropped). After the students had time to conduct tests to make observations, they applied what they learned to make a prediction about the following scenario: If a crumpled piece of paper and a flat sheet of paper are dropped from the same height at the same time, which would hit the ground first? Students also wrote down an observation they made from the tests they did. We will continue this discussion about gravity later this week!
