LOCAL ACTIVITIES AND SHARING KNOWLEDGE
COT Roadshow:
On the 22nd September The College of Occupational Therapists brought their 2016 Roadshow to Glasgow. This event was hosted by the COT Scottish Western Regional Group. Over 40 delegates enjoyed two very stimulating and engaging sessions within the beautiful and sunny surroundings of the Charles Rennie Macintosh inspired “House for an Art Lover”. The afternoon session began with a welcome and presentation on membership engagement from Stacey Abraham, the COT Membership Engagement Officer. Rena Findlay, Scottish Western Regional Group Committee Chairman, then updated us on the work of the Regional Group. This was followed by Karina Dancza, COT Professional Advisor – Children and Young People, who reminded us of the work of the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT) and their membership benefits. Maureen Shiells, COT Education Manager (Pre-registration), then gave us a brief overview of her role.
The rest of the session consisted of the main afternoon topic - "Occupation Centred Practice", engagingly and powerfully presented by Karina Dancza, who asked us to think about how we describe occupational therapy to others and challenged us to ensure that activity is the focus of our interventions at all times making “occupation our proximal focus”.
The evening session “Demonstrating the Impact of Occupational Therapy” was presented by Gaby Stewart, COT Scottish Policy Officer. Gaby set the scene for this by giving us the political context with information on current legislation likely to have an impact on our profession, with particular emphasis on the "Occupational Therapy Improving Lives Saving Money" document. She gave us practical solutions as to how to evidence our value ranging from short, sharp messages via infographics, through the power of narrative, to gathering impact data in order to determine the financial benefits of our interventions on patient care.
The enthusiasm of delegates throughout both sessions stood as testament to the success of the day, and we are very grateful to all speakers for their time and for reminding us of what the essence of being an occupational therapist means, sending us off feeling inspired and enthusiastic about our profession.
