OUC Ice Floe Race 2013

Context:

OUC’s Annual Ice Floe Race is held in the Otonabee River just north of Peterborough, Ontario.

The starting line is at the base of Lock 24 and the finish line is just above Lock 23 (the Otonabee River is part of Canada Parks’ Trent-Severn Waterway).

The purpose of this document is to help you get to the starting line no matter what direction you are coming from. To help you, this document contains the following sections:

  1. How to program your GPS to the OUC Ice Floe Race Starting Line:

NOTE: GPS units vary by manufacturer, model and software version. These instructions are based on the Garmin Nüvi 285W,version 7.10.

Instructions provided may vary from those for your GPS but you should be able to apply these to your unit without too much difficulty.

  • If your GPS does not power up automatically, turn it on now.
  • Select the “Where to?” icon from your main screen
  • Select the “Coordinates” icon from the icons displayed. Tip: On Garmin Nüvi GPS units, you can find the “Coordinates” icon by pressing the down arrow, which takes you to the 2nd screen of icons.
  • This will take you to the “Enter Coordinates” screen.
  • Tip: Ensure that the following format is selected: h ddd° mm.mmm’
  • Enter the following coordinates into the fields in the top row: N 44° 23.251’
  • Enter the following coordinates into the bottom row: W78° 16.196’
  • Select the “Next” icon.
  • Select the “Go!” icon and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Easy eh? 

  1. Directions & Map to the OUC Ice Floe Race

coming from the east (Ottawa, Brockville, Kingston, etc):

  • Please refer to the map immediately below. Please note that this is the simpler route, not necessarily the shorter route.
  • Drive west on Highway 401 until you get to Belleville
  • Take exit 538 (Wallbridge Loyalist Road / County Road 1) and head north
  • In approximately 7.5km, turn left onto County Road 14 (Foxboro – Stirling Road)
  • Continue north on County Road 14 for approximately 30 km, passing through Stirling and Springbrook.
  • When you get to Marmora, turn left (west) onto Highway 7 (Trans-Canada Hwy)
  • Drive west on Highway 7 for approximately 50 km and then turn right (north) onto Providence Line
  • Continue north on Providence Line for approximately 3 km to Division Road, whereupon Providence Line becomes 8th Line.
  • Continue north on 8th Line for approximately 6 km until you get to County Road 32.
  • When you get to County Road 32, turn right and proceed slowly as you will only be ~100 metres from the OUC Ice Floe Race Starting Line.

coming from the west (Sarnia, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Toronto, etc.):

If you’re coming from the west, head to Peterborough first. Just before you actually get to Peterborough, decide whether you want to take the “Through Downtown Route”or the “Bypass Downtown Route.” This next set of directions and map will get you to Peterborough, and the following sets of directions and maps will guide you through the Downtown and Bypass routes.

  • To get to Peterborough from the west, refer to the map immediately below.
  • Take Highway 401 east past Oshawa. About 17 km later, take Exit 436, which is Highway 35-115 north to Lindsay/Peterborough.
  • In approximately 18 kms, you’ll see the exit for Highway 35 to Lindsay, but do NOT take this exit. Stay on Highway 115 north to Peterborough.
  • Continue north-east on Highway115 for another 33 km, during which Highway 115 becomes Highway 7-115
  • Slow down after you pass the exit for Airport Road, because now you need to choose either the “Through Downtown Route” (3.1)or the “By-Pass Downtown Route”(3.2)


3.1.“Through Downtown Peterborough Route”:

  • Please refer to the map on the next page
  • Approximately 1 km after Airport Rd, take the exit for the Parkway and follow it for 1.6 kilometres until you hit Lansdowne St.
  • Turn right ontoLansdowneStreet and follow it to George Street.
  • Turn left (north) ontoGeorge Street and follow it throughdowntown. Note that mid-way throughdowntown, George St. turns intoWater St. andcontinues north as a one-way street.
  • Keep heading north on Water Street and just outside of downtown,you'll notice that itbecomes atwo-way street.
  • Keep headingnorth on Water Street, past the PeterboroughZoo, past the jet fighter on a pedestal, and past the Tim Horton's on theleft at 1527 Water Street.
  • After you pass the Tim Horton’s slow down and turn right onto Nassau Mills Road (a.k.a. “County Road 32").
  • Follow Nassau MillsRoadas it crosses the river, curves around in a horseshoe shape and then follows the winding river banknorth.
  • You'll pass Trent University Campus and then you'll passLock 23 "Otonabee" (that’s close to the Ice Floe Race Finish Line).
  • Keep going north until you see the building for Trent Waterway Lock 24 "Douro." That's theStartingLine.

3.2.“By-Pass Downtown Peterborough Route”:

  • About 1 km after Airport Road, stay on Highway 7-115
  • In approximately 6 km, Highway 7-115 becomes Highway 7 at Television Road. Stay on Highway 7.
  • Approximately 4 km after passing Television Road, turn left (north) on Providence Line
  • Continue north on Providence Line for ~9km to County Road 32.

Please note that Providence Line becomes 8th Line immediately north of Division Road. Stay on 8th Line.

  • When you get to County Road 32, turn right and proceed very slowly as you will only be ~100 metres from the Starting Line.

  1. Parking:
  • Whether you choose to park closer to the Starting Line, closer to the Finish Line, or in-between, please park your vehicle as far over on the RIVER-SIDE (WEST) SHOULDER of County Road 32 as you safely can.
  • If you park on the opposite side of County Road 32, you may find after the race that your vehicle has been ticketed and towed for blocking emergency access to residents and the race.
