OTY Nomination: Why Nate Wetzel Is an Amazing Faculty Mentor
Most of us remember our transition from high school to college. It can be an intimidating experience for anyone, no matter how well-rounded you are. Watson Hall in particular witnesses many students coping with the transition, since it is the residence hall where most incoming freshmen are placed. Perhaps one of the most comforting things for students living in Watson is knowing they are surrounded by staff and government members who are genuinely concerned about their well being.
But there is another figure residents can rely on: Professor Nate Wetzel, our faculty mentor.
Nate Wetzel can be found in the Watson Hall lobby every Thursday at 5:00pm, chatting with students and helping them with their Math homework. “I get to find out what’s going on in students lives,” Nate said, when asked why he likes being a faculty mentor so much. As far as teaching and helping students with Math, Dr. Wetzel loves “seeing the lights go on” when students begin to understand a concept. “It’s the answer to the question ‘When am I ever gonna use this stuff?’” Nate said referring to why he teaches Statistics 355, 350, 356, 357. “Big advice would be to be curious,” Professor Wetzel once said, “Curious enough to study, just because it’s interesting to learn. Enthusiasm helps.”
In his spare time, Nate enjoys Lego, cross word puzzles, and origami. Regarding origami, “It’s actually really mathematical. There’s a lot of patterns. It’s very calming.” Last week Nate even lead an Origami program in our lobby, and it was a huge success. And when we get back from Spring Break, Nate has once again agreed to be a keynote speaker at our Academic Reception.
It’s unfortunate, but many college students feel disconnected from their professors and the people in their building. That’s why staff and government members are there to enhance a sense of community and create a familial environment.
That’s why Nate Wetzel is not just our faculty member; he’s a part of La Familia Watson. We value everything about Nate, from instructive programs like his Annual Paper Airplane Flying Contest, to amusing tidbits such as his own periodic beard shavings. He’s environmentally conscious and rides his bike everywhere. He’s an exceptional educator, he tells good jokes, and he’s just an all-around good man. And he’s always willing to listen.
Professor Nate Wetzel has earned Watson Hall’s respect, affection, and our nomination for the Of The Year Award.
