Mission Statement

The mission of Ottawa Township High School, in a cooperative effort with students, parents, and the community, is to educate students in a safe, positive, challenging environment which promotes responsible citizenship and active lifelong learning.

Course Description (from Course Catalog):

This course is designed to accommodate a full range of problem readers based on their Individualized Educational Program and intensified areas of deficit(s). This course is designed to provide an intensive practice in following direction, provide practice in statement repetition, present various analytical skills that can be “higher order” thinking tasks, introduces both “fact system” and vocabulary words, written expression, and address the students’ self-image with reading.

SRA Corrective Reading (Comprehension C)

Required Materials:

  • 1-inch binder, lined paper, writing utensils, assignment notebook
  • Other materials will be provided in class: Corrective Reading Series, Student Workbook, Transition Assessments

Key Concepts-Students will gain knowledge of the following key concepts while enrolled in this course. Key concepts are aligned to Illinois State Learning Standards, Common CORE Standards, and College Readiness Standards:

Students will receive instruction in the skill areas of: Reasoning, Information, Vocabulary, Sentence, Basic Comprehension, and Writing. Students who mastered these skills are more likely to understand what they read. Comprehension B1 and B2 teach these skills, many of which are developed from skills taught earlier. The teaching is done so that what is introduced is used, applied, reinforced, and repeated with sufficient frequency to assure mastery.

Assessment- Students will demonstrate knowledge of key concepts by completing the following types of assessments:

Daily Class participation

Workbook completion

Fact game participation

Group work participation

Writing exercises

Mastery tests

Transition Portfolio

Classroom Expectations and Procedures:

Each student is responsible for bringing all necessary materials to class daily. The students will be responsible for organizing a transition portfolio and keeping track of daily assignments for all classes. Students are required to bring their assignment notebook, paper, writing utensils, and homework from other classes.

Each student is required to arrive on time daily. Tardiness will result in a teacher detention.

Active participation in all teacher-directed and independent activities is essential.

Each student is expected to behave in an appropriate maner to show consideration for each person learning in the classroom.

Cell ohones and electrical devices must be turned off and out of sight. Use of these devices in the classroom will result in confiscation of the device and a 201 detention.

Homework Policy:

Most assignments will be completed during class time. Students must utilize time in class to work on assigned work. Students who are absent may make up lessons they missed for points.

Grading Policy:

Students can earn three types of daily points for daily activities: Group work points, Workbook points, and Bonus points.

Students can also earn points on Mastery Tests and Transition Assessments.

Grading Scale:

90% and upA

80%-89%B

70%-79%C

60%-69%D

Below 60%F

Breakdown of Grades:

Daily classwork=40% of final grade

Mastery Tests=40% of final grade

Transition=20% of final grade
