Course Introduction / Participants will explore how to best meet the needs of English language learners through an intensive study of the book What Every Teacher Should Know About English Language Learners by Nancy L. Hadaway, Sylvia M. Vardell, and Terrell A. Young. A variety of activities will deepen the participants understanding of English language learners’ needs so that they may integrate English language development and academic content instruction. Participant activities include PowerPoint presentations, group discussions, analysis of classroom video, turning in artifacts produced as a result of implementing teaching strategies as well as discussion of these experiences.Course Overview / OBJECTIVES: Participants will explore cultural, linguistic, and family backgrounds of English language learners. Teachers will learn how to organize culturally and linguistically responsive classrooms to assist English language learners. Participants will focus on practical strategies that promote literacy and content learning among English language learners. Participants will read assigned chapters before each study session, participate in PowerPoint presentations, discussions, and turn in artifact(s) that incorporate teaching strategies for reaching English Language Learners.
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION: Participants will view PowerPoint presentations, video clips and helpful websites.
MATERIALS: Participants will receive the following: What Every Teacher Should Know About English Language Learners by Nancy L. Hadaway, Sylvia M. Vardell, and Terrell A.
PRODUCT: Participants will utilize teaching and learning strategies in their classroom and as a result produce an artifact or artifacts from their experience. Artifacts may include, but are not limited to classroom video, lesson plans, student work, modified materials, student surveys, data, and/or modified assessments.
