Other Searches Google Can Do
1. Do Calculations in Google
If you don’t have a calculator handy type the problem into Google
For example: type 26 * 9000 and press enter or type 22 / 3 * 44 + 9994
2. Convert anything to anything
Type -34 Celsius in Fahrenheit OR -34 C in F. It will also work for any unit e.g. 50 knots in mph OR 550 yen in dollars
3. Definitions
To tell Google to define a word, type define: (the word) into the search bar e.g. define: podcast
(You can also use what is: podcast or what are: locusts)
4. Do a search for a word and its related synonyms
For example, if I do a search for ~horse I will get pages that mention pony, stallion, equestrian etc.
5. Finding a word or phrase on a page that Google presents
Hold down CTRL and press F. A small bar will appear at the bottom of your screen which allows you to type in a word or phrase and highlight all occurrences of that word or phrase.
In IE Explorer a small window will pop up and ask you for the same thing.
6. Searching for particular types of files
Do you want just PowerPoint files? Then do a Google search for (your subject) filetype:ppt
7. Find the current time in any location
Type time London UK or time New York United States. This only works for major capital cites.
8. Find the current weather in a location
Type weather and the name of the capital city and the country e.g. weather Moscow Russia
9. Find the capital of a country
e.g. capital Zambia
10. I feel lucky
If you type a search term into the regular Google search bar and then click the “I Feel Lucky” button, Google will take you to the first site on its list right away.
NOTE: Several strange things can be done with this button, for example:
Type find Chuck Norris in the bar and click I Feel Lucky
Type ewmew fudd in the bar and click I Feel Lucky
Type xx-piglatin in the bar and click I Feel Lucky
Type Google Easter Egg in the bar and click I Feel Lucky
Type Google Swedish into the bar and click I Feel Lucky
Type Google cheese into the bar and click I Feel Lucky
